The Sunday Times XXIV: Sights, sounds, adventures & eats! My week in a flash ♥

May 12, 2013 by thejessicat

Hey everyone! I’m back from Indonesia!

It’s so good to be home on the Malaysian soil once more.

Was very sad to leave Indonesia so soon though! frown

Admittedly though, this four day escape to our neighbouring country really did me well.

Those of you who have me on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook would know darn well how stressed and emotional I was regarding the political turmoil happening in Malaysia, biased news coverage, headlines on our mainstream media and never-ending protests in our nation’s battle for democracy. frown

Black days of mourning with my nation in protest of the breach of democracy crying

Keperitanku tidak dapat diluahkan dalam perkataan. Kurasa ditipu oleh pemimpin sendiri!!frownfrown

This had me following each and every update in the news pertaining to the tumultuous situation; getting so riled up in the process.

At that point, I wished I could just shut my eyes and just forget about all the troubles we were facing… or better yet, jet-set to another country for a while.

And I did.

Thanks to the US and Indonesian ASEAN committee, it's good thing that my trip to Indonesia for ASEAN Blogger Festival 2013 was scheduled last Thursday. laugh

I was invited to be a panel speaker during the conference. My session was 'Photoblogging' where I spoke about photoblogging, and addressed issues of the rise of photo-heavy content and incorporating photography into social media.

Thank you for having me! And kepada semua participant yang menghadiri session saya, terima kasih!

I hope you have learnt a thing or two smiley

How coincidental! Just what I needed – a moment to focus on my passion instead of my sorrows.

After three days of conferences, I'm home.

I’ve just landed in KLIA (Kuala Lumpur International Airport) and

feeling lethargic from all the travelling and transiting!

Now that I'm back, I don’t know if I should catch up with where I left off?

Sebenarna, aku sudah tidak tertahan dengan keadaan huru-hara politik ini!! angryangry

I’m still keeping myself in the dark about our political updates as we speak.

Succumbed enough to the political outrage. I guess… sometimes, ignorance is bliss after all.

I'm a happier person that way.laugh

So anyway, what’s been happening this week? A LOT.

Here's a little recap! devil

Attended Global Sound System – the official dance party of Music Conference Asia 2013!

Full blog coverage up soon!

Attended the Heineken Kick-Off to Ibiza beach party at The Mines Wellness Hotel

Full blog coverage up soon!

Headed back to gym to continue my daily routines

Let's get it on!

I cannot stress this enough, always remember to hydrate!

Your output of perspiration needs more input of h20! wink

Here are some of the post-workout food I cooked this week.

Due to popular request (or rather, demands from you all! frown), I will also run a series of cookbook articles where I will be sharing the recipes of cooking clean food and low-calorie meals when the revamp of the new face of my blog is launched, okay?

Grilled lemon-butter herb salmon and organic wholewheat durum spaghetti bolognaise

with mushrooms & chopped chives – all on top of a bed of crisp, fresh lettuce

A platter of rosemary & thyme grilled zucchini with low-fat cottage cheese,

roasted baby carrots, tomato, chick peas & black eyed peas

with baked pears for that extra, natural sweetness!

Wholegrain oats with soy milk, toasted banana slices sprinkled

with chocolate protein powder and sunflower seeds

Grilled salmon with sides of honey-baked baby carrots,

garlic pea sprouts and organic sunflower seeds

A power combo sandwich of tuna, omega eggs, organic brown flax seeds,

hemp & lettuce on traditional wheat bran toast.

Quick breakfast of Chocolate Protein Oats with apples, soy and flax seeds

Tuna salad with chickpeas, hardboiled eggs and lettuce

Spent time cuddling my kittyboy Chivas at home after my four days of absence.

I can't tell if he loves me or not, as my cat is seemingly incapable of expressing emotions blush

Tetapi biarkanlah. I'll just love him anyway, regardless! heartheart

To me, I enjoy loving and letting love surround me.

There are many types of love, yes? It really doesn't matter if the feelings of the other person/animal/item are mutual.

If you love someone/something, it makes your world go round. To resonate with love and affection gives me a certain glow of happiness and a sheen of joy! heart

Tak setuju? Well, when you love someone, it makes you happy, right?

Your argument is invalid cheeky

Was surprised with a McDonald's Hamburglar X Hello Kitty!

Was surprised again last week with the McDonald's Grimace X Hello Kitty!

I wasn't the only one being surprised. We decided to give babyChivas a girlfriend.heart

He didn't seem too amused nor fascinated with his new companion. Boo-hoo! crying

Aight, it's time to hit the sack.

It's been a long weekend and a brand new working week beckons usdevil

Colleagues and I fooling around at work during breaktime.heart

Also, how often do we turn up in the same pattern of workwear? Never. Totally worth a photo!

Before I end this post, let me wish my dearest mother, godmother, nanny and grandmother…

"No language can express the power, beauty, heroism and majesty of a mother's love.

It shrinks not where man cowers, and grows stronger where man faints, and over wastes of

worldly fortunes sends the radiance of its quenchless fidelity like a star"

Dear mommies, your presents are with me! Await them when I see you at the end of this month heart

So sorry I couldn't be home to take all of you out, as I just touched down from Indonesia only this afternoon.

What about you? I do hope you had a great time with your mothers, or at least, remembered to personally wish her a very Happy Mother's Day. laugh

Even the fact that we, their children, had them in our thoughts, would mean so much to them. Yup, mothers are really that selfless… or at least mine are!

Sometimes, people tend to forget how the simplest things in life can be the most extraordinary.

But not for me. It’s always the simplest, tiniest surprises that makes the little girl in me most delighted!

Or… could it probably be just an excuse for me to eat ice-cream?

Terpulanglah kepada saudara-saudari bagaimana nak mengerti! Hehehe devil

Have a lovely week ahead, dear readers. cool

Much love,

kissJessicat

Rocking the runway with punk and never-seen-before Avant-garde fashion! Amazing 34 Hair Party by A Cut Above @ Mid Valley Megamall KL

May 3, 2013 by thejessicat

It was a night of never-seen-before fashion taken to jaw-dropping wonder and extreme measures.

I gladly accepted the invitation when I received Winnie’s text message one evening. It is my utmost pleasure to be at another one of her marvellous events!

Brought my other half to the party with me.

Celebrating over three decades (34 years, to be exact!) of prominence in the hair industry, A Cut Above threw an out of this world hair X fashion show in conjunction with Mid Valley Megamall Fashion Week 2013.

The party was aptly named Amazing 34.

She told me that it was going to be an avant-garde and punk inspired evening. So being me, I stuck to the theme as closely as possible. smiley

Just a little snippet of what I wore (I know my manicure should be black instead of red though!)

Here is my top-to-toe lookbook for the event. I decided to adopt a glam-rock look tonight.

Jessicat wears:

Leopard print corset by Supre | Asymmetrical skirt from a fashion bazaar |

Acessories by Diva | Studded wedges by Vincci+ | Knuckle ring clutch by Nose

We got there just in time! cool

The host for the evening, Chui Ling, had just started to give us guests a warm welcome.

Chui Ling looking classy on stage

She then called upon Winnie, founder of A Cut Above Group, to join her on stage to make an appearance.

I was so glad to see her out and about already and making a seemingly good recovery progress (from her recent car injuries). Her speech was short and sweet – as always. smiley

Looking fine as ever, Winnie thanked us guests for being here tonight and

promised that we will be wowed by what we were about to see.

And oh yes, I believe her! laugh

I was excited and rushed to the front of the stage

(with my significant other in tow!) to get the best view.

Tonight featured three distinct themes: punk, edgy runway trends with a twist, and the avant-garde.

Let’s take a look at the first one, shall we? PUNK – here we go! cool

Local band An Honest Mistake looking mighty punk-ish tonight!

They rocked their original tracks including their latest ‘Giddy Up Horsie, This Chase Ain’t Waiting for You’

I almost couldn’t recognize buddy Leonard, as I’ve never seen him looking like that before blush

And with the blue mohawk (wig) hairdo? It goes pretty well on him!

Darren and Leonard rocking the stage on electric guitars!

I’ve always been a fan of punk, alternative rock and easycore music since high school.

Had fun headbanging with them with the crowd! laugh

While they were performing, a bevy of models began to sashay down the stage showcasing trendy runway coordinates with an edgy twist and attitude to boot! How often would you see a band playing their songs with a fashion show happening in unison?

Yup, definitely not the typical hair/fashion show you would expect.yes

—————————————–

Oh and if stylish pieces and latest outfits are your thing, do check out www.enni.net.au.

It’s a online apparel store based in Australia. Yup, that’s your doman of fashion right there! Wink

—————————————–

This was one of my favorites! On top of the very unique make-up and silvery mohawk, I

totally love her spiked bralet, the studded leather jacket and the grafitti-print pants heart

Awesome combination of dangling chains, paper-frills and blue ringlets in her hair

Another hair-raising glam punk fashion in view! Quite literally too.

With a red-black mohawk, this model featured heavily tattooed arms,

a neon coloured mesh strapped in belts and black liquid leggings with fishnet stockings

Watch the short video we made

Once that was over and done with, a series of avant-garde collection stole the limelight the moment models adorned in experimental fashion strutted the catwalk. laugh

I managed to shoot each and every style paraded on the runway. Let’s have a look at them, shall we?

This reminded me of a prison inspired uniform with a cushioned overcoat!

A giant velvet bow adorned his collar. His lips were of powdery white, and so was his hair.

This model showcased a side-shaven buzzcut with shimmery silver and black coordinate

(I used to sport this hairstyle too, but in red!)

 Bold and stylishly edgy.

I’ve seen some fashionistas donning this look lately!

This model portrayed a very metro-modern look with

side-combed hair and sci-fi inspired glasses

This model had a dual coloured trojan-mohawk.

Brown on his left and bright red when he turned to reveal his right!

He was draped in brown and black fur, fish net sleeves with marble designs on his tightpants

This model (with an impressive physique no less!) came out in a skin-tight spandex outfit,

long flowing “hair” and looking like a dangerous cross betwen Darth Vader X skull face.

I honestly don’t know how he can see while catwalking!

This model featured a semi-formal look with a daring twist. Huge ruffles of black frills

adorned his shoulder and netting were binded around his legs

Covered fully in a black cloak, the blonde dip-dyed mohawk

stood out boldly from this look

Can anyone say Avatar with a warm, bronze twist? These ‘conjoined twins’ walked

with an aura of Red Indian braves, the kind that would instil fear and respect from their tribe

In her very high platforms and metallic silver outfit, this model walked precariously

on stage and I even held my breath with every step she took!

Mysterious and clandestine, this model walked up slowly but steadily on stage

dressed fully in shiny black and large circular tubes in tow

Adapting science fiction fantasy into fashion, this outer space-like model

catwalked on the runway on stilts and threw a few stunts too!

Doesn’t this look like a giant optical illusion? devil

The final performance was a very dainty and sophisticated one.

It was interesting to see how ballet and hair were fused together.

While ballet dancing, this nimble and quick artist transformed her white hair almost entirely to red!

Amazing 34 was indeed a visually arresting showcase of both radical hair and fashion works of art.

I was wowed over completely. It may have taken only a few minutes for each model to exhibit each fashion statement, but the amount of effort, designing and styling by the creative minds at work behind everything we saw tonight certainly deserved a standing ovation.yes

It is with such creativity and innovation in the hair and fashion industry that commanded a

humongous crowd witnessing the unique display at Amazing 34 that night.

Just when you thought the show was over, A Cut Above had another surprise in store for us all.

The larger-than-life sized red centrepiece which we all thought was just a prop started to move about.

And the final model of the evening emerged!

Everyone, myself included, was startled but pleasantly surprised! laugh

She reminded me of Queen ‘Padme’ Amidala from Star Wars.

Although appearing mildly menacing, her moves were graceful, and her gestures, elegant.

Check out the runway video we made featuring the avant-garde collection

This wasn’t in the day’s agenda, but looks like the surprise element came from someone else this time.

Guess who decided to surprise our dear Winnie instead?

Her adorable god daughter Crystal Lee crooning Miley Cyrus’ ‘The Climb’ and Jessie J’s ‘Price Tag’ to all of us

My favorite part was when she rapped. Although I’ve heard her sing this song many times,

I can never get enough of listening to her rap that verse

Winnie giving her speech of gratitude for a successful night.

It’s always beautiful to see the mother-daughter love between them; so sweet and moving! heart

The event came to a closure with the fashion designers and stylists making their way on stage.

A thunderous applause followed thereafter, for without the entire creative team behind this brainchild, we would not be able to even catch a glimpse of such challenging and meticulously-crafted masterpieces of fashion! yes

Winnie was extremely busy buzzing about everywhere but I managed to catch her after the show!

She still looked so gorgeous and glowing even by the end of the day. surprise

I would be so stressed, frazzled and sweating buckets if I was the one hosting a show as huge as this!

Back to back with my favorite hair personality of all time, Winnie! heart

Thank you for a wonderful Tuesday night of a spectacular, out-of-this-world fashion and hair party.

A Cut Above never fails to impact their guests with of the most eye-catching and trend-setting that ever existed.

With the beau, who was my date for this exclusive event

With Edmund of A Cut Above. Thank you too, for the invite!

I’ve known him for a while too, Ed’s such a nice and patient person to deal with

Ohai! Bumped into Josh and Olivia at the party too.

We were standing beside each other during this entire time and I didn’t even realize till after!

With sweet and stunning Amber after the show

We have a funny story. Also, I cannot count the number of times Paul and I

bump into each other whenever we shoot events. Expect a collabo soon! wink

Ben and I catching up. It’s been a while! Also, he coaches amazing

catwalks by the way, thus hailing him as the catwalk guru! wink

Winnie with the creative team gathering on stage for a final appearance

To me, this party was more than just a celebration of 34 years of excellence. It was no doubt, a hallmark and pinnacle of modernism in the domain of fashion and hair. yes

Breaching boundaries and departing from practical guidelines of fashion as well as society’s usual expectations of style and appearance, tonight was hands down, a cut above the rest of all the other fashion week events I’ve attended this year!

Kudos to the mastermind of the entire concept behind A Cut Above’s Amazing 34!

You’ve outdone yourself again, Winnie dear yes

One more thing, most of you always ask me where I usually get my hair done.

I have only one answer – where else but A Cut Above? wink

Out of all the hair salons that I’ve tried, I only recommend and trust A Cut Above to give you only the best of anything hair-related. From hair cuts,  hair treatments, to hair makeovers or anything at all, rest assured it’s handled by the experts!

I’m a first-time voter for our GE13! My thoughts on the Malaysian General Elections 2013 (5th May)

May 2, 2013 by thejessicat

In exactly four more days, will be the one, fateful day which the power of democracy falls into the hands of the people a.k.a the rakyat.

Like many others, this Sunday will be my first time voting for the party/candidate of my choice.

I've thought long and hard and have been on the fence all of this year and late last year.

I've been passively monitoring views from both sides – the government and the opposition.

I've been researching both policies, manifestos and mandates and have listened to both ceramahs.

And two months ago, I have since made up my mind and will be flying all the way back to my polling station (located in my hometown Penang) just to cast my vote!

Can't say that I'm not the least bit excited! devil

Polling stations/booths opens at 8AM – 5PM. Come early, expect to wait due to the long queue so bring something to entertain yourself for hours! angel

I've marked my calender and am now sporting nude nails for the first time in ages.

Ladies, remember to remove your nail polish/manicure of any sort before the voting process as you will risk ineligibility to vote or have your vote spoilt.

Don't ask me why, it's something to do with the indelible ink that will be dabbed onto your fingernails.

Important! The ink will take about 30 seconds to dry. Be smart and bring along a tissue to dry off your finger before holding your ballot papers. Any smudge or stain on the ballot paper will render it spoiled vote.

Logic aside, just don't go to your polling booth with painted fingernails, aight?wink

REMOVE THEM NOW! Your vanity can wait heehee. And so can mine!

Remember not to wear anything that supports or aligns towards the party of your choice to avoid ineligibility

Be absolutely neutral in your clothing. I suggest wearing either black or white – safest bet! laugh

Anyway, in view of the election day, here is a relevant, interesting infographic revolving around real estate and property that I'd like to share.

iProperty.com Malaysia - #1 Digital Property Advertising Business in Malaysia

Created by Iproperty MY, the number one website in Malaysia
whether you have a house for sale or are looking to buy.

I can relate to the infographic above very well, as I also share the sentiments of the majority.

As of late, I have actually been scouting and surveying property prices around some of my favorite hot spots around the Klang Valley, particularly Damansara at large.
But the thought did cross my mind; to wait until AFTER the GE13 to continue my search and proceed any further.

Reason being, well… who knows?
The plausible change of regime *might* see a change in real estate policies, market values and measures. laugh
Ini kalilah!

All in all, whether the tables will be turned or not, I wish for a clean and fair electoral process. yes

Because, whether the ball switches sides to the opposition party or maintains with long-time current ruling party of a 56 year chokehold, the outcome of the federal and the state government that will be in power for the next 5 years ultimately lies in our hands.

We shall all wait and see. Hidup rakyat!

I hope that everyone eligible to vote will exercise their democratic right to cast their vote on the ballot paper this coming Sunday. Don't be lazy. Come on, X marks the spot! cool  Do you know who you are voting for yet? wink

This election is very crucial. Vote wisely, folks!

Super street carnival ushering the official arrival of the SAMSUNG Galaxy S4 in Malaysia!

April 29, 2013 by thejessicat

It's finally here! After months and months of speculation and anticipation, the Samsung Galaxy S4 has officially hit our Malaysian tech market.

So yes… in the palm of my hand right now, lies the latest smartphone of them all.

The SAMSUNG Galaxy S4 : Life companion

kini di pasaran!

It was a sunny Saturday last weekend. cool I made sure theboyfie and I dressed up in blue in spirit of a huge function set to take the entire Klang Valley by storm.

Jessicat wears:

Grafitti skull tank in blue by Radioactive |  Denim skirt in white by Padini | Accessories by Nichii |

Supernova Check Hearts (limited edition) in Berry Red by Burberry | Classic Suede in blue by PUMA

All decked in shades of blue. So.. where were we going? And why blue?

This explains everything.

Check out the amount of people celebrating the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S4!

The convoy of vehicles has just arrived one of the destinations – Sunway Pyramid!

Guess what came out of these Galaxy S4 vehicles?

It was a mass parade of performers! devildevil

Cheerleaders going hard with their stunts and tight routines!

Big bands performing thumping rhythms!

Their outfits somehow reminded me of American alternative rock band, My Chemical Romance cheeky

The celebration at Sunway Pyramid saw heaps of people jostling to be part of the action

What's not to be excited about? It was the launch of the most anticipated phone and not forgetting…

FREE ICE-CREEEEEAAM!! Awwwwyeah! yesdevil

The party didn't end right there.

The troop of Galaxy S4 vehicles convoyed to the city and made its final stop at Low Yat Plaza KL.

There was more in store for us in this gigantic Galaxy S4 truck

No celebration is EVER complete without brightly-coloured helium balloons and bursts of shimmery confetti!

It was a total Disney 'UP' moment right there devil

Music and more acts were performed back-to-back

Throngs of people gathered at the location to join the fun.

It was no surprise that merriment filled the air instantly.

WATCH THE VIDEO OF THE GALAXY S4'S CELEBRATION JOURNEY FROM MALL TO MALL!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMJ1SAnGNR8&feature=youtu.be

Pretty epic video! The launch day was really a success yes

Once the joyous occasion at the entrance of Low Yat Plaza was over, people hurriedly made their way inside to catch the unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy S4 at the Celcom Blue Cube outlet. I followed suit.

Big guns of Samsung holding up the Galaxy S4

I stepped in soon after to check out the famed Galaxy S4 for myself.

After briefly playing and exploring the Galaxy S4, the amount of mind-blowing and interactive features definitely surpasses most of its competitors in the market, while maintaining its simplicity.

Among all, here are the top 3 things I fancy most about the Samsung Galaxy S4.heart

It was undeniably thin and feather-light weight for a smartphone – 130 grams only!

I loved its bright, clear, super-sharp and optimized full HD super AMOLED display. The colours were vibrant but not glaring to the eye too; which works best for me, as I always use my phone under the covers late at night before I sleep.

Built at 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9 mm, the size was just the perfect fit for my palm

Just a pic of the basic homescreen

The Air View/Air Gesture feature

But no, I'm not casting a magic spell, but I was actually scrolling through images in the gallery! laugh

Without even touching the screen and smudging fingerprint stains on it, the Galaxy S4 performs my commands according to the motion of my hand.

It enlarges photos, previews emails, speed dials and much more with the slightest hover of your hand or finger.

Pasti seronok. Memang ghairah sungguh! Aku tak henti-henti main dengan fon baru nih haritu.

Kalo main kat tengah-tengah malam hitam pita tentu nampak macam bomoh kan? Hahahaha.

The Smart Pause/Smart Scroll feature

Just when you thought telekinesis will never be possible with technology, you're wrong. surprise

The Galaxy S4 knows what you're doing and adapts accordingly to what you want. by automatically scrolling down when you're reading. When you're watching something, say, a movie or a video clip, it automatically pauses when you look away (or yawn!) or when somebody interrupts you.

This is so that you won't miss anything! It also automatically resumes when you want to watch it again by looking at the screen.

Might consider switching sides soon. This beauty is truly one wicked gadget!

Macam-macam kelebihanye! Skarang, sape nak beli? Hehe.yes laugh

A dining experience at CHIN’S Stylish Chinese Cuisine, QEII Penang

April 27, 2013 by thejessicat

Whenever it comes to recommendations, I often get asked by my dearest readers, friends and family the golden question of them all –

“Jess, what’s the best place to have a fancy, classy dinner ah?”

To be honest, the list I can come up with, would be an endless one. (Malaysia is awesome like that!)

But if you narrow it down to Asian cuisines in Penang, only ONE will always remain on the top of my list.

It’s none other than CHIN’S Stylish Chinese Cuisine

Without even taking into consideration the top-notch selection of food this restaurant has to offer, the location is in itself, an amazing feature of CHIN’S dining experience. yes

Why? Take a look for yourself.

The entire restaurant is located right above the sea!

Wouldn’t you just love to pamper yourself or your loved ones with a seafront dining?

I know I would heart

So where is this impressive-looking restaurant situated exactly, you ask? surprise

Just next door to QE II – 360 Waterfront Venue, Penang.

Locals would’ve heard of QEII Penang, but if it doesn’t ring a bell, they are both located in Weld Quay.

CHIN’S Stylish Chinese Cuisine is nestled deep inside Penang’s popular seafront tavern.

enlightenedBefore I begin, let me share a little bit of  trivia to those who thirst for its background story.enlightened

CHIN’S first opened in London back in 1987 by a Malaysian entrepreneur, Mr. Dave Chin. This classy Asian eatery took England’s Food & Beverage scene by storm, winning two highly coveted and prestigious awards – ‘Best Restaurant of The Year’ by What’s On in London Magazine and ‘The Best Chinese Restaurant in UK’ by Stores Magazine, USA.

On this blazing trail of collective accolades, CHIN’S Restaurant was recognized as “Best of the Best” by Good life Magazine, UK.

More than two decades later, the year 2010 marks the arrival of CHIN’S to

our lovely Pearl of the Orient – Penang, Malaysia.

Aren’t we lucky? wink

Upon setting foot into CHIN’S, the first thing that greets its patrons is a large and rather unique, psychedelic framed modern art mounted onto the indigo wall. This is something you don’t see very often – especially in Chinese restaurants!

Then again, CHIN’S never fails to surprise, does it? wink

Themodern art depicting artistric portraiture of iconic figures placed behind traditional Chinese furniture

of solid wood and gold trimmings make a delightful and cosy patio for guests to sit before or after meals

How many of these legends can you recognize?

Call me unworldly but I only recognize seven! frown What about you?

Walking past the patio, I entered the main dining venue of CHIN’S.

I was taken aback at how elaborately stunning the interior was! surprise It was not only extremely classy, but it came with a modern twist as well. Apart from being well-lit with chandeliers, various forms of contemporary art hung from the walls and ceilings.

This restaurant’s is almost always fully-booked – no surprise here!

(Make sure you place your reservations to avoid being disappointed!) laugh

I fancied the long sofa right smack in the middle of the dining area! yes

It was very comfortable, came with giant cushions and boasted black velvet textile-motifs on its upholstery.

Thanks to CHIN’S, I was fortunate enough to be reserved a table directly adjacent to the sea and night sky, despite it being in full capacity. They seem to know my fondness towards picturesque views while dining. smiley

Even the spotlights were specially adjusted for me (to take nice photos)! How thoughtful. heart

I was fascinated with the plate in front of me. They gave me a Che Guevara plate tonight.

If you didn’t know, the latter was a popular Marxist revolutionary icon.

I began to realize that every table had intricate settings – which included a hand-painted ceramic plate each too.

Paying attention to the fine artwork by hand-painted artisans, I could decipher that each artwork had an emotion within and a story to tell. Below is a compilation of some of my favorites!

Geez! I cannot believe how much I am gushing over crockery. indecision

But really, have you ever seen something quite like these in an Asian restaurant? No? Precisely.

Decor and interior aside, I know you are dying to know how good the food at CHIN’S are.

They knew I didn’t exactly fancy anything too sweet and especially nothing too spicy, so they hand-picked a menu that would suit my taste best.

I am usually not a picky eater, but who doesn’t like having their preferences catered to? laugh

A sneak peak at some of my favorites from the ten-course menu we are about to see!

They made me feel so welcome with their simple, thoughtful gestures and friendly demanour, and I could see how every customer in the restaurant was attentively paid attention to. heart

This makes CHIN’S stand out even more, with their impeccable customer service. yes

ON TO THE FOOD!

Fairy Blossom tea (comes with free refills!)

This delightful herbal tea was served piping hot, was smoky and had a light floral aftertaste to it.

You gotta admit – it looks pretty too! This is a perfect alternative to some of the more commercial types of teabags/teapots/tea leaves that we see in repetition everywhere.

Four Seasons Appetizer

This platter was served with four mini dishes.

From L-R: Gele Mountain Chicken, Citrus Winter Melon, Prawn on Toast and Spinach with Pinenut & Mustard.

Gele Mountain Chicken

This came in chicken chunks with peanuts.

The chicken was tender, flavourful and presented in an (edible) miniature crispy basket.

Citrus Winter Melon

As I wasn’t a fan of winter melons, I was rather hesistant. But to my surprise, I loved it surprise

The winter melon came in tiny cubes and each mouthful was burst of citrus wonder.

This dish is served cold and it tastes just like sweet tangerines!

Prawn on Toast

This crispy toasted pastry is laden with sesame seeds and shredded prawn meat.

It is also a tad spicy from the prawn paste and XO Sauce. I loved its smoked, burnt after-taste!

Spinach with Pinenut & Mustard.

I liked how the spinach leaves were presented so adorably. devil

It was neatly stacked up in a tiny pile with the pinenuts!

This dish was slightly sourish and spicy to open one’s appetite for the next meal; serving the purpose of an appetizer altogether.

Garlic Cucumber

Sure, go ahead. Judge. This dish doesn’t look appetizing at all, does it? My thoughts exactly.

But the moment I took a bite of one of the Japanese cucumber slices, I was so wrong. It was very crunchy and that slight tinge of spiciness married with the aroma of the garlic gave it the extra kick I didn’t expect!

What it lacked in the aesthetically pleasing department, it surely made up with its power-packed flavour! yes

Golden Needle Mushroom

This was one of my strong favorites. Deep-fried to crispy goodness, these little ones were irresistable to ever stop digging in for more. I liked how it was tassled with thinly sliced onions and spring onions too. yes

Comfort food, I must say The kind that you wish would come was bottomless (much like Nachos!) with your beer.

I was also treated to one my favourite types of wine, the white wine. Sauvignon Blanc, to be exact.

It came just in time when I was in the middle of enjoying the meals.

This is the Whitehaven Marlborough – imported from New Zealand

Althought great as an aperitif, wine, to me, is always perfect pair with exquisite line-ups of food

Szechuan Flame Codfish Soup

This dish made a grand entrance towards my table.

THIS. BOWL. IS. ON. FIRE!! It was was accompanied with flaming charcoals encircling the bowl.

The soup was hot and had a spicy as well as a slight sourish tang to it. Inside, lay tiny bits of winter melon, chilli slices, pickled chilli and of course, codfish fillets.

I liked how this instantaneously warms up my tummy and cleared my nasals with its hearty, warm piquancy.

The next thing that was brought out by the waiter was not food,

but a trapezoid saucer containing warm water to wash our hands with.

In motion! laugh

Gotta make sure my hands are clean for the next dish, as it required direct contact with my fingers.

The waiter placed four small saucers of what looked to me like

condiments and add-ons for a much bigger main dish coming my way.

I was right! laugh The waiter brought a whole duck leg (which I could smell its aroma from afar!)

and a steaming basket of thin Chinese pancakes

Aromatic Crispy Duck

One look at the entire set-up made me wonder how I was supposed to eat it. surprise

Of course, if you were in the comfort of your own home with no one watching, you would just grab the entire duck leg by the bone and chew off the meat ala Bam Bam from The Flintstones, yes?

But CHIN’S thought two steps ahead for its customers.

The waiter was back and began shredding the entire duck leg in full frontal view! laugh

A LIVE demonstration of duck shredding! devil

Seeing as it was my first time eating one of their signature dish, Mr. Sam Chin, owner of CHIN’S Stylish Chinese Cuisine, took over and personally showed me how to eat and appreciate this dish properly.

Of course, there is no right and wrong, but I would rather learn a thing or two from this restauranteur, especially the most ideal way of eating this!

He showed and guided me a step-by-step method on which order of ingredients to place first.

Thanks, Sam! laugh

Now, I am going to impart this knowledge to you, so you will look like a pro and eat like a pro even when you dine at CHIN’S for the first time! Shhh… surprise them and don’t say you learnt it from me! devil

1. Take the crepe skin from the steaming basket and place it on your plate

2. Spread it with a genourous amount of duck sauce.

3. Stack a few cucumber slices neatly in the middle of the crepe skin

4. Place a few strands of spring onion slices next to it.

5. Add a few chopped green chillies (I skipped this step because I really cannot handle my chillies well!)

6. Pick up the shredded duck and place them on top of everything. Put as much as your heart’s content! cool

Ta-daaa! You’re done. And there you have it…

The finished, opened product (unwrapped)

The right way is to roll/fold the light thin crepe/tortilla-like skin wrap around the ingredients and eat it together

The taste was mind-blowing! yes The flavour of the crisp, yet tender shredded duck slices was bold and the accompaniment of the duck sauce, cucumber and spring onion complemented this dish so well.

Okay, enough seriousness for a second.

Here’s Sam and I smiling for the camera! smileysmiley

Red Lantern Chinese Cabbage

Just like the Garlic Cucumber, this was also a very simple looking dish that exceeded my expectations.

These slices of cabbage were cooked until soft, warm and had this unique twang of sweet and spicyness, as this dish was cooked with chilies and whole garlic cloves. This is arguably one of my favorite dishes here! yes

Sam placing the next dish on my table

I have always been of the opinion that great leaders should always lead by example and get on par with their ground staff. Despite being the owner and bigboss of CHIN’s, I’ve noticed how Sam always plays an equal part in the running and the operational day-to-day ongoings in the restaurant!

He even personally serves food occasionally and spends time engaging in conversations with the guests.

That’s not something you see a boss do everyday, right?

Thanks for the wonderful and warm hospitality, Sam! laugh

Double Flavored Freshwater Fish

There’s an obvious reason why this dish was given its name.

It comes in two very contrasting parts of flavour and garnishing. Take a closer look at the picture below:

Left :  Hot & Spicy side | Right : Pickled and Garlic side

enlightenedTRIVIAenlightenedThis recipe originated from the Hunan province!

This dish was comes in the variant of a very popular freshwater fish, the Patin Fish or also known as the Iridescent Shark Catfish.

Despite having two very opposing tastes, both flavours jive together very well with my palate. The juicy fish broth taste was distinct in both sides of the fish, and this dish is usually best eaten along with steamed rice.

The two flavours were very strong contenders in being my favorite, but if I had to choose between them, I liked the left one best!

Beef Tenderloin in Mustard and Garlic

I’ve always had an eye for aesthetics so I’ve gotta say, this one takes the cake for the most beautiful food presentation, hands down!

This medium well chunky beef cubes were mighty succulent, bursting with flavour and tender-soft, unlike plenty of beef I’ve eaten elsewhere where you’d bothersomely chew and chew to no end but just refuses to disintegrate. -___-“

If you’re wondering what that long line of orange-coloured bits are, it doesn’t only serve as decor but it doubles as a garlip dip!

Just take a chunk of beef and dip in the line of fried garlic before putting it

into your mouth for that extra crunch and flavour! wink

Sesame Black Bean with Crispy Pudding

We have finally come to the desserts. Sweet tooths, rejoice! devil

I would say that this savory dessert is most apt for those who dislike anythin too sweet. The pudding, although deep fried, was not oily but crispy on the outside and soft on the inside; flowing with custard the moment you sink your teeth into it. yesVery carefully made, CHIN’S!

The sesame black bean ice-cream is also self-made by them, mind you. It had a vanilla base but a recognizable sesame after-taste.

Maltose Toffee Apple Banana Fruits

As if one dessert wasn’t already enough, CHIN’S pampered me with one more epic, gravity-defying dessert! heart

This dessert had to be eaten with extra care, for each fruit is coated with extremely hot toffee at boiling point. You would be writing a deathwish if you put one directly into your mouth immediately after this dish arrives! surprise

Which, is why CHIN’S practices caution and had a waitress conduct the very interesting cool-down method for me.

Another LIVE demonstration right before my eyes

She was carefully picking up each toffee fruit and dipping in ice water

for a few seconds before putting it back onto my plate

This dessert is leaning towards the sweeter side but hey, after the scrumptious feast, I could go for something sweet to wrap up my evening.

Once you get past the hard, crunchy toffee bite, your tastebuds are treated to a warm, fruity taste of apple or banana (depending which one you ate!) An excellent alternative to how you would usually eat fruits! yes

BuddyMinny and I chilling by the patio

That being said, dinner was officially over and done with.

I was won over entirely and did not find a single flaw in their marvellous cuisine. Such high-quality, premium selection of authentic Chinese dishes deserves to be savoured by all! cool

After a more-than-satisfiying dinner, I had to get up and take a stroll around the restaurant.

Knowing me, I couldn’t resist taking pictures!

The bar area

Behind the bar area

The whole dining area was proudly lined with display cabinets of all their accolades and awards

I also sneaked upstairs during my brief exploration. Teehee. devil

The verdict? I was charmed. It was jaw-droppingly lavish and extensive!

I can totally see myself throwing a big birthday celebration here. Or an engagement party.

Or a wedding banquet dinner.  Or even a Hen’s Night/Bachelorette party.

Hmmm.. did I just give you a good idea? laugh

As you can probably tell by this lengthy blog post and comprehensive review,

I had a marvellous experience at CHIN’S Stylish Chinese Cuisine.

It certainly lived up to its name. yes

The restaurant was captivating as it was traditionally Chinese in its fare of authentic SzeChuan, Hunan, Mongolian and Northern Beijing cuisines but it is certainly not your typical Asian restaurant, as it is splashed with aspects of modernism with several, varied influences from around the world!

For such brilliant decadence and sophisticated dining experience complemented with first-class service, supreme hospitality and immaculately classy ambience, CHIN’S Stylish Chinese Cuisine is no doubt, a class above the rest. yes

Trust me on this, I only recommend the best. *winks* wink
