The Sunday Times XXV: Sights, sounds, adventures & eats! My week in a flash ♥

May 26, 2013 by thejessicat

Thanks to Wesak Day being a public holiday, I’m back in Penang now for the long weekend!

One of the best things about living in Malaysia is the insane amount of public holidays we have, I swear.

It’s so awesome that it’s ridiculous.

Our public holidays consist of holidays at national & state levels, royal installations, birthdays of the who’s who in our governing body, religious purposes and the fact that we comprise several different races would mean Malaysians observe almost every festive occasion there is to celebrate.

Holidays can only spell more fun times out and about! laugh

Cuti awam, cuti umum, semua cuti pun kiterang sapu! Macam tiap2 hari ade cuti. Seronok giler!

It's crazy I know but hey, I'm not complaining! laugh

My purpose of returning to Penang this time was to visit and spend quality time with my family.

In the afternoon, we adjourned for some Japanese food, shopping and coffee. heart

Just the weekend outfit of the day

Candid of my holding granny's hand. Priceless photograph. heart

Hello from Sakae Sushi, Queensbay Mall! laugh

Coffee sesh with the family

(Pardon the coincidental blinking by two people)

Had coffee right after

Uncle Mikey and I

At night, we were booked in for a nice Chinese banquet dinner at Jade Blosson Restaurant at Krystal Point. This is to celebrate the homecoming of one of my favorite cousins, Kevin, who came back to visit from Los Angeles, with his newly-built family. laugh

Couzzie Kevin and I

(P/S: He doesn't have sleepy eyes, just wasn't looking into the camera lens LOL)

As far as I can remember, I’ve never exactly been too fond of children and babies. indecision

I just don’t fathom how everybody finds them so amusing – give me cats anytime. They’re far more affectionate and entertaining.

Can't believe I'm an aunt already! surprise

Tonight, I held a toddler for the first time. He wriggled initially and I freaked out, but we eventually got along just fine. I was just happy I didn’t drop the kid. yes

Photographic evidence that I ain't too shabby with children perhaps? cheeky

Say hello to my 2 year old nephew. The very charming little one – Caleb.

How cute is he? Adorable beyond words! heart

I think we are naturally gifted at posing for photographs HAHAHA

Dinner ensued at last, and more merriment soon followed.

This was what we were served in our eight course dinner. (Photos aren't too pretty this time – sorry!)

To my surprise, my family didn’t fancy the food at all. LOL I think granny's expression says it all

I had no complaints, though.

What really left an impression were my two favorites, the Steamed Herbal Chicken and the Peking Duck.

The chicken was incredibly tender; bursting with a hint of Chinese herbal essences with each bite. The duck was tastefully done. It was so aromatic and flavorful; cooked to just the right texture – not too soft nor too chewy.yes

I was helping myself to them both one after another uncontrollably. cheeky

The interior

The rest? Well… it wasn’t bad neither was it exceptionally good either.

I’d say it is just your average Chinese dinner fare.

The very next day, I made plans with Kevin and his lovely wife Rachel (whom I clicked with very well!) to spend some time together for an afternoon of lunch and coffee. heart

You know, being cousins, it’ll be nice to do some cousin-to-cousin catching up and bonding sans the entire family.

Saturday outfit of the day

We went to my favorite restaurant in Queensbay Mall to have lunch.

It was T.G.I Friday’s! laugh Here's some of the food we had:

Jack Championship BBQ Beef Ribs

★★★★✩

Baked Potato Skins with Bacon & Cheese

[No ratings because I didn’t have any – but they seemed to like it!]

Baked Stuffed Mushrooms

★★★★✩

We didn't want to leave just yet – too engrossed in our world of conversations!

Coffee was at Old Town White Coffee, Queensbay Mall.

I never regretted making plans with them that afternoon.

There was so much catching up to do with Kevin, while Rachel and I got to know each other better. We talked, we ate, we laughed the afternoon away. I foresee myself jet-setting to Los Angeles sometime next year! 😀

Have a safe flight back to the US of A, guys! kiss

Being back in Penang for the long weekend, I wouldn’t miss a chance to party on my beloved island.

Especially when my bestest buddies are around with me! heart

The night was Richard Durand presented by Twelve XII, QEII On the Sea and Heineken.

Partied with my fave Penang buddies! devil

He played, in equal parts, uplifting trance as well as progressive trance. His remixes were wicked! yes

Thanks to Sam for the help, I got to take a photo with world #89 Richard Durand himself.

After a hectic Thursday night, Saturday night was another night of partying.

It was Hennessy Artistry Penang!

Suffered a very, very bad hairday so I decided to tie all my hair up for the night

I was surprised when I got told numerous times that I looked nice with my hair done up. surprise

Hennessy Artistry Penang was amazing, as usual.

It was fantastic being able to catch up and party with some of my favorite Penang friends again, as well as my buddies from KL.

The interior was magnificent!

May 25, 2013 | Thank you @HennessyMY for another great #party! I had a great time ❤ #hennessyartistry #penang by imthejessicat on Keek.com

More in another blog post.

Oh and… I got myself a new tattoo (again). laugh

One every year since the year 2007 and counting!

Remember the one that I sketched on my shoulder with markers?

Part of it came to life.

More in a full blog post soon.

Clearly, I had a great weekend. But what’s been happening earlier in the week?

Gym, as usual. Decided to switch my routines to more interval and circuit ones for maximum efficiency.

Had time in between sets to steal a piccie

Weights. This is for the abductors and adductors

Barbells are my favorite

And so is the spinning/RPM sessions!

What else? Been cooking. A whole lot.

Here are some pictures of my post-workout meals to make you hungry hehe cheeky

Hardboiled omega eggs with sliced tomatoes, tuna chunks,

cottage cheese and lettuce on wholewheat toast

Fluffy giant salmlon omelette and sides of garlic,

stir-fried organic pea-sprouts in olive oil and kidney beans

Platter of four: Grilled Shitake mushrooms and tomatoes, boiled carrots and steamed broccoli

Pan-fried brown rice in olive oil, eggs, kidney beans, organic peasprouts

with lots of garlic, quinoa, basil and black pepper!

treasure pocket of brown rice baked in ricotta cheese & garlic, salmon, green & yellow zucchini,

baby carrots, pea sprouts and egg with a dash of quinoa seeds & black pepper!

Also been having sleepless nights. (Don’t ask why)

The things you do when you can't sleep.

My week also saw me going to Publika for the very first time.

I KNOW, I KNOW. DON'T CHIDE ME. Yes, believe it or not I have not been there ever. Well, I just had no specific reason of being there neither did I make the effort to drive there to check the place out or make any plans there. sad

But that night, thanks to my buddies, plans were made at Publika!

We went to The Red Beanbag for dinner and drinkies at Barfly after.

Wednesday night with my girls and the rest (not pictured)

Desserts after dinner at The Red Beanbag

More in a full post soon!

Had also been shopping at fashion bazaars!

The most recent one was the Markets @ Jaya One fashion flea marketheart

Girls day out. En route for shopping and lunchie! devil

We bought lots of pretty pieces. I think I ended up with a few dresses, tops and skirts.

Photo credits to Ning. Thanks girl! xo

Random, irrrelevant photo of my cat being confused as to why his picture is taken

Caught my sleeping child on the table LOL devil

I woke up one day to find that my black kitty has turned snow-white.

LOL kidding.

Last weekend was also BestiePam’s birthday!

It was a house-party at her crib and the theme was supposedly ‘Pyjama Party’ but I was the only guest who showed up in pyjamas. Grr. cryingcrying

Fell in love with Rama's bunny slippers at the party and kept wearing it.

How can anyone not love this giant, fluffy thing? heart

Random photo of the other half and I during her party

We played the classic Kings Cup!

Watched them down Jagermeister trains! It's cooler than regular Jagerbombs methinks.

Happy birthday Pammy, I enjoyed the party! Hope you liked the birthday present I got you smiley

Later that week, I was invited to a Star Trek Into the Darkness movie screening in Cathay Cineplex thanks to TalkFILM.

Never one to be into science-fiction action movies, I found myself scratching my head in dismay for the most part of the movie.

Admittedly, I have never watched any of the previous Star Trek movies and I stand completely at polar ends of being a trekkie. blush

From a complete trekkie-noob standpoint, I found Spock rather peculiar-looking.

Oh and I could't help but to tune out without realizing and found myself organizing my schedule for the coming week on my PDA. Despite trying my level best, my attention span for this movie was next to nothing. I wasn’t even paying any attention half the time. I felt bad but ultimately felt better when I heard some snoring coming from the back of my seat.

Looks like it isn’t just me who found this movie utterly boring, eh? blush

May 16, 2013 | Just got back from the movie screening of Star Trek Into Darkness! Go watch it!

Give me back Star Wars anytime.

Perhaps I would appreciate Star Trek better if I had a better comprehension of it, though I enjoyed watching Captain Kirk in action. I thought he was rather hot.

After the movie!

One afternoon, I found a pretty ingenious way of eating my favorite Secret Recipe cake, the White Dark Chocolate Cheesecake.

Though it may gross some of you out, I figured that I am going to share it regardless.

So this was what I did.

I cut off a spoonful of cake and dipped it into my cup of Flat White coffee for a few seconds before lifting it up and putting it straight into my mouth. devil

Having white chocolate, dark chocolate and cheese mulled together into a cake is good enough, now with a touch of coffee-flavour? I’m a genius! LOL.

Sedap giler, percaye aku tak? Cube sendiri pastu habaq kat i camne okey? Haha.

Jokes aside, I loved how it tasted.heart

Dipping it into hot coffee made the crumbly chocolate half at the bottom disintegrate with moist, producing a wonderful melt-in-your-mouth texture.

And the cake wasn’t cold anymore, obviously. Not that I minded having it served cold – this was just so much better! Try it… and tell me what you think!

So there you have it, a wrap-up of my busy fortnight.

Have a good week ahead, folks. Make every single day count! laugh

Much love,

kissJessicat

A new addition to my canvas of body art. My 6th tattoo: Native American tribe/Red Indian eagle feathers!

January 3, 2013 by thejessicat

Throughout my years of being a body art enthusiast, I often get asked if I've gotten any new ones recently.

The answer is, yes. I did it mid last year and this tattoo marks my sixth ink so far.

If you've not read the story of my tattoo journey, you've GOTTA read this – here

Let the games begin. After six years, it's all too familiar now, really.

Two (or was it three?) hours passed and I was done… ALREADY?

This pain was nothing compared to what I endured on my ribcage. That was torturous haha!

End result.

A pair of iconic eagle feathers from the tribes of Native-America (Red-Indians)

So.. what's the significance of these eagle feathers, you ask?

Legend has it that it symbolizes trust, wisdom & strength, and those who were granted these feathers were hand-picked by their tribe leaders.

It was considered most honourable & rewarding to the Native American warriors and braves of the tribe.

Okay, I'm done with my story.

Bet you didn't know that right? :D Now you do.

Saldy, my inkmaster, discussing with me on preferable positions of my tattoo

Always the first step to tattooing. It is first carbon copied onto your skin for guidance.

Don't want anything to go wrong with free-hand sketching, right?

Waiting for my tattoo artist to prepare the palettes of my chosen colours into his tattoo gun

After so many tattoos, you'd obviously think I'm used to the pain, the fear & the whole shebang, right?

WRONG.

Do not want 🙁 I still get the chills and turn into a nervous wreck with each session

I honestly have no clue why I still feel like a bundle of nerves after so many!

Perhaps it's just a psychological thing. People don't exactly like to be in pain nor would anyone look forward to feeling multiple piercing sensations, do they? Unless they have a fetish for pain….

But I put on a smile anyway. Despite being hesitant and scared of needles,

I was looking forward to seeing my new ink!

He first started by drawing in the outlines of the eagle feathers.

It hurt. But no matter, I'm a tough cookie.

Keep it still & steady, Jess. Don't flinch. Don't fidget. Don't twitch!

Trying my hardest LOL

Outlining in progress

After outlining, he proceeded with the inner linings of the feathers

After almost an hour, all the solid black linings were done.

Saldy began to fill in the shadings, contours & texture of the detailed feather itself as well as the red & blue colours of the string & beads which fasten the two feathers together.

Finally, it's over and done with!! Like it? What do you think? :D

I know it looks a little red and swollen in the photo above as it was taken immediately after the session.

After a week, it's fully healed now!

Photos of my other tattoos:

My body art canvas from 2006-2012

Konzy & bestiePam was there with me throughout today's session.

They kept me company, helped me take photos and endured my moans LOL

It's always great to have company. Thankyouuuuuuu

As we speak, a very talented tattoo artist is conceptualizing & designing an epic work of art for me this year

Having a horrid blank in the middle of my cat & camera tattoo makes the art on my upper-back look amateur! It has completely no relevance to one another despite being placed so close together; screaming a result of bad placement.

Duh! They weren't done together… two years apart, in fact! :( That explains why.

See the ugly, wide, giant, empty space between my shoulderblade (cat) tattoo

& my back of the neck (camera) tattoo?

Have always wanted to fuse them both together – getting rid of the ugly wide space.

I knew I had to do something about it once and for all… to fill in the empty space with a shoulderblade sleeve that makes it a seamless, fluid one-piece, instead of scattered pieces.

Which is why, for 2013's addition into my canvas of body art/mod, I've decided on a sleeve :D

A void such as this would be best filled with some magic.

And I meant that literally  My upper-back sleeve will be a metaphor of a poignant, beautiful tale.

Anyway, I'm now looking forward to see the final drafted design! :D

Yay me! Will show ya'll soonest okay?

A new Greek tattoo on my ribcage! A story of my tattoo journey and I throughout the years

January 19, 2012 by thejessicat

Okay this is it.

Some of you have been requesting to see my tattoos (since 2 years ago – so sorry!) but I somehow didn't quite feel like sharing it in a blogpost.

But finally, I relented. Here's an entire post about my tattoos. Random decision, but here goes!

For those of you in the know, my most recent body art is a Greek tattoo on my ribcage; got it done last month in Singapore.

Greek scriptures and an original quote written by me

Just before I made my final decision to have it imprinted on my body forever

Just like all my previous tattoos, my design was printed out and carbon-copied onto my ribcage for positioning and preference purposes.

So far so good!

I took an immediate liking to it and gave my inkmaster the green light

On the tattoo bench. Yup, I'm all set and ready to begin!

What did I get myself into?

Bring on 5 hours of intense and gruelling pain.

With each and every time I endure hours & hours of yet another hellish tattoo session,

I ask myself one question :

But oddly enough, I never fail to keep coming back every year and mark myself with another body art

Simply 'cos I adore tattoos, its intricacy on human flesh & how it is a new experience for me

They say pain is addictive. What say you?

I daresay that my ribcage tattoo was the worst, most excruciating experience I've ever had amongst all my other tattoos.

Funny thing was, I've always known the ribcage tattoo to be the most painful spot to ink on.

So intense that my inkmaster gave me some Tequila shots to down

Felt better after 2-3 shots. It helped to numb my senses

Alright. Breaktime over, continue the buzzing of the needle!

I've always wanted a tattoo in a foreign language, but never knew what language.

Chinese? Nah, I have Chinese heritage.

French? Nah. Too mainstream.

Latin? Nah. Sexy… but *still* quite mainstream.

Thai? Sanskrit? Arabic? Japanese?

Then it struck me

A Greek tattoo came vaguely to mind since my high school days.

Unfortunately, I hadn't a single grasp nor knowledge whatsoever about the language and I didn't wanna trust Google Translate – of all things!

But guess what?

This year proves to be the best & most coincidental time for me to finally get started on my Greek tattoo because my Greek boyfriend and his father so kindly helped me translate the quotes I had in mind and pen out the sentences in perfect grammar for me.

For that, I wholeheartedly thank the both of you, Σας ευχαριστούμε Κωνσταντίνος και Γεώργιος!

SEMI FRONTAL VIEW

After 5 hours into the procedure : and it's done!

So that was it. My latest (5th and counting!) tattoo – the ribcage tattoo in Greek.

What's next? Okay so… I know I owe you stories of my past 4 tattoos in the past.

So hit the button and let's begin!

It was my freshman year of college back in 2007.

So young and innocent… yet wild, bold and raring to go!

2007 : 1st ink

The tribal heart lower back tattoo

It was done at a friend's house by a tattoo artist from Singapore who was touring Malaysia at that time.

Oh guess what? I found something quite interesting. My blogpost about this very first tattoo!

My reaction after reading that blogpost written by my 18 year old self :

Oh geez. Seriously, 18 year old Jess, seriously?

Exactly a year later….

2008 : 2nd ink

The tribal cat outline left shoulder blade tattoo

Trivia time!

I deliberately requested one of my kitty's right eye to be blacked out.

Bet you didn't know, my own right eye is semi-blacked out as well. My right vision is terribly impaired.

Felt somewhat proud yet nervous at the same time.

Someone was interviewing & filming me throughout the process!

DONE DONE DONE!

Had it done in Mandala Tattoo parlour

Candid shot displaying my 1st two tattoos

Expecting another tattoo a year later? Well no, not in 2009.

Skipped a year of tattooing; that year put me through something more painful than that.

What can I say? The emotional pain that lingered outweighed physical pain any day.

But once that was over and dealt with…….

MADE A COMEBACK

2010 : 3rd ink

The Egyptian Eye of Horus wrist tattoo

If you haven't read it, I found my blogpost that I wrote about this wrist tattoo written back then! 🙂

Since I've skipped out on a year, I had TWO tattoos done in that year to make up for it.

So here's the second tattoo done in 2010 :

2010 : 4th ink

A winged camera + film neck (nape) tattoo

Inking session in motion – outlines first!

Keep on going!

My not-so-enthusiastic-but-holding-in-the-pain face

Had both my tattoos of 2010 in Singapore by this Phillipino tattoo artist who owns a shop in Orchard Road

Filling it in….

Done before you know it!

I absolutely love how it peeks outta my back collar like that

I hope you've enjoyed the short history trip back into time.

And now…… as mentioned in the beginning of this post.

2011 : 5th ink

A Greek scripture ribcage tattoo

So there you have it, an entire post which encapsulates my entire journey of tattoo thus far.

Don't ask me why I do this, why I inflict myself with pain on the surface of my skin is honestly beyond me

Perhaps, I find it an incredible journey of self discovery, personalization.

Truth be told, it does not, in any way alter my personality even one tiny bit

I know will look back with nostalgia and reminisce my younger days of what was significant to my youth.

My body is a canvas and body art leaves an indelible mark I will hold close & personal to me for life.

Bear them to my grave, I shall.

My latest body mod addition! YAY 10th body art – the Industrial Piercing

August 28, 2011 by thejessicat

For those of you following me on Twitter or have me on Facebook, yall would know that I have undergone yet another body art procedure today.

I was at the Rock Ink Night by Mandala Tattoo Parlour at Finnegan's Irish Pub & Restaurant, Straits Quay. Nope, I didn't do a new tattoo (although I still haven't blogged about my 4th tattoo yet, sorry!!) but my 6th piercing this time round.

It is known as the Industrial Piercing (US) or as the Scaffold Piercing (UK) or Construction Piercing.

For those of you who aren't too familiar with body mod lingo, it refers to any two pierced holes connected with a single straight barbell.

Yes, that's my ear.

Okay now that I've slightly "educated" you with some piercing trivia, lemme show you what I've gone through.

They say once you get through the Industrial Piercing, you can get through anything. 'Cos apparently, Industrials are the worst, most painful kind of piercing ever. Says people who have done a multitude of piercings, that I trust.

So I plucked up my courage to attempt the Industrial

After all, I already have 4 tattoos. A piercing shouldn't be thaaaat bad….

Right? 😀

WRONG. Right in your face, Jess. You're downright mistaken.

I was told to drink up, drink up, and drink up some more.

'Cos alcohol somehow numbs certain sensations

I did wonder why they told me to drink more but when they said, "Trust me. Drink more. It will help", I began to harbour some slight fear within me. Yikes. What am I getting myself into again?

Alright, ready? Quickly, get over and done with it, please

ONE

TWO

THREE

AAAAAAAUUUUUUGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH !@#$%^&*#%&@%

TA-DAAA!! Whole process took about 5 whole minutes.

Compared to 5 hours of each tattoo I've done so far, these 5 minutes is equivalent to torture ;(

Oh and, here's a collage of all my friends who were there!

Didn't manage to take everyone's piccies 'cos I really cbf when I was in pain but yeah.

Glad to see you peeps around! 🙂

Worst part was, I got home and asked the boyfie's sister (who also has an Industrial) in Australia how long it will take to heal or at least not hurt anymore, she told me "a few months, but everyone is different".

HOLY SHEEEETS. 🙁 🙁 🙁 nnnnnnnnoooooooooooo.

A FEW MONTHS??? All my tattoos only took 2-3 weeks to heal completely ;(

I can't even wait one month, let alone a few. Sigh. Looks like imma have to lay off the seafood for a while.

ANYWAY, I'm done! (and in pain)

credits to buddies Joyce & Edwin for helping me take pics during the night! xx

Then again, pain is the new game.

I'm not passionate towards tattoos and piercings for nothing; everyone has preferences and this is mine.

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6vZwnEHQ-gA

Here's the video, as promised!!

To me, it's a work of art on my biological canvas, engraved in there for life.

No pain, no gain.

And I'm lovin' it. Hell to the yeah!

I echo buddy Edwin who said that I had "balls of steel" and the boyfie who said "brutal; that's my girl"

*biggrins* Although my ear is still throbbing with pain as we speak, imma go to sleep with a smile.

I love how my piercings just peep out subtly like that teehee!

Goodnight lovelies! 😀

My Egyptian wrist tattoo! The 3rd body art piece

June 30, 2010 by thejessicat

Alrightey!

Thanks to those of you who have requested to see my new tattoo which I had done yesterday, there you go! 😀

Okay this baby of mine will be my 3rd. In case you didn't know, my 1st was done in 2006 which is a tribal design of hearts on my lowerback, my 2nd was done in 2008 which is a winged cat on my left shoulderblade.

And this one… will be an Egyptian horus eye.

Okay here are some videos of the process!

Watch only if you ain't weak hearted 😛

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pR5sjvCRN4w

10seconds of the outline being done!

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-n67WohrgM

10seconds of the shading being done!

Don't ask me the reason WHY I chose all those designs. Because in fact, none of them bears any meaning to me. I know it's subjective that some people opt to tattoo themselves because it signifies something and some people don't.

Well, sorry wrong number – I don't as well.

Because to me, art doesn't need a meaning. Why should it? If it bears a meaning, then the aesthetic purposes of art would not be a meaning centered artifact by itself anymore. It will become

Reason instead – and not Imagination.

Yeah and halfway through, I just remembered the drive that propelled me to do this tattoo today. I'm turning 21 tomorrow! 🙂

So well, I guess that can be validated as a REASON. LOL A milestone, more of.

I personally am a ardent fan of body art, so that should be enough to justify why I like tattoos as well. And if you must know, Kat Von D is my idol! I used to watch Miami Ink/L.A Ink every night when it airs on MTV and marvel at some of the designs!

She's one plucky woman! Though I would never be as heavily tattoo-ed as her due to the constraints of the Asian norms for women, I do enjoy indulging in the pain when i feel like it.

Oh btw, his name is Saudi. He's a Pinoy and he's fab at what he does! 🙂

Don't know why but, why do all tattoo artists look the same?

My previous 2 artists had the similar look too. With long hair and heavily tattoo-ed arms with nipple piercings!

The face you see is a mask.

I'm honestly not enjoying myself!!! AAUUUUGHHHH

Trust me, the pain is addictive! 😀 😀

But at some points when the pain gets a tad more unbearable, you can try to distract yourself!!

It's funny when it hits near the vein or the bone because it makes you jolt upright and go – YIKES!! WHAT ON HOLY MOTHER EARTH WAS THAT!?? OUCH!

Cry of the wild! LOL just kidding.

If you ask me, of course it's painful. All 3 of my tattoos were. But I guess, no pain no gain yo!

If you don't feel any pain, you're either totally on crack or your pain threshold is that of Ironman.

Sitting there for so long makes you actually numb. When I was finally done, I honestly didn't wanna budge at all.

Can I just stay here?

Much thanks to Ven for the company, helping me video the prcoess and take pictures for me

Love you gal 🙂

In just a few hours, it will be the 1st of July once again. Finally, I will be hitting the legal age! I guess this is a birthday present I'm giving myself.

After all, you only turn 21 once! In fact you turn your age only once LOL but still, twenty-one is a big number. So…. this is for you Jess! 😀 😀

Happy Burpday! May you stay rebellious as always.

Love, me.
