The city of neon trees, gorgeous lights and more! A trip to the luminous and brightly lit i-City Shah Alam

March 1, 2012 by thejessicat

Hiya lovelies! Like my pet Zebra?

Well, you should.

He's pretty benevolent; stands in a solitary position eating wires all the time

Poor zebra, prolly thought it was grass his whole life.

With electricity constantly running through him with each surge of voltage in every bite he takes, it's no wonder he's always lighted up.

Same goes for all the other animals in this kingdom of lights

Ladies and gents, welcome to i-City in Shah Alam!

Today, imma share one of the tourist destinations we took my Aussieguests Allyce and Lauren to.

Remember the previous Aussieguest, Carly, I hosted not too long ago? 🙂

Well this is Round 2.

Selamat Datang ke Malaysia Allyce dan Lauren!

Previously, I brought them to Batu Caves – the famous, historical Indian place of worship.

Apart from showing them heaps of other places of Malaysian lifestyle, we decided to bring them to this technological city of lights as we ourselves, have not been there before either.

So let's get 'em neons on!

Awesome!

More photos with le housies and our wonderful Aussieguests

With buddy Pam

Flanked by housies Pam & Darryl ;)

Us with fellow housie Edwin. IT IS COMPLEEEEEETE!

My lovely gurls and I

Wonder what's behind us?

Take a guess. ;)

I think the snowflakes would be a giveaway.

A GIANT CHRISTMAS TREE!!!

Yeah as you can plausibly tell, it was Christmas season when we paid i-City a visit.

And you know how we Chinese are always overzealous in putting up Chinese New Year decorations waaayyy before Chinese New Year?

Some even have those Chinese decorations up & blasting Gong Xi Fa Cai songs BEFORE CHRISTMAS!!!

There. Chinese New Year decorations as illustrated.

No matter… SMILE! anyway.

Pretty sights!

As we adjourned to the neon forrest, we were in awe upon seeing the beautifully illuminated fir trees; standing ostentatiously in a myriad of vibrant colours!! :D :D

It takes more than just basic electrician training skills to create this wonderland.

It was a lovely sight to see. Here they are!

Recognized as the 1st lightscape tourism destination in Malaysia with state-of-the-art LED technology showcase, no wonder this place is always buzzing with people everywhere!

Made me feel like I'm in Twilight Zone! :D :D

No, not Twilight.

TWILIGHT ZONE.

The American anthology television series which debuted circa 1959

Armed with our DSLR cannons, we were delighted to start shooting away!

First time in this trippy neon city! 😀 Worth a photo

Thanks for the photo Ed!

I was sitting the on the ground snapping photographs away!

Buddy Pam joined me on the ground for some camwhoring

1 2 3 *click*

The boys followed suit 🙂

And everybody joined in as well!

We had to bid farewell to the wondrous night time wonderland as it was getting late

All I can say : bedazzled by i-City!

My pet zebra says goodbye.

And so do we! 😀 😀

A month after Chinese New Year.. better late than never – GONG XI FA CAI!

February 24, 2012 by thejessicat

So after exactly a month, I've finally got round to finishing the batch editing of all the photos from my 2012 Chinese New Year!

Don't know why I didn't exactly take as much "proper photos" this CNY – all of the photos you are about to see today are all shot with sub-par phone/tablet camera quality.

If I could sum up Chinese New Year for me every year (in no particular order), it  would be :

1. Family

2. Food

3. Hometown

4. Angpows! $$$

5. Red

So here's what I was up to this Chinese New Year – in photos!

So here we go… FAMILY!

Yup, that's my immediate family. Small, but complete nonetheless 😀

At 5'7", I believe I inherited my height from my dad.  Don't know if that's supposed to be a good thing, since I'm always b!tching about my height on Twitter. Heh.

Anyway, roadtrip up North to Penang with my fellow Penangites! :D

Penang Bridge during sunset!

The moment I crossed the bridge, I felt a tinge of nostalgia sweeping up to me like a morning breeze.

Good ol' Penang; encompassing so much memories of growing up, life, love, friendships and more

KOMTAR: Penang's tallest landmark heritage

Brought the boyfie home for CNY.

Hahahaahah  what does High Expectations Asian Father have to say?

lololol just kidding! They got along pretty damn well

Seafood dinner by the seaside with the parents & him for our early CNY reunion dinner. Being islanders, seafood is one of our staples amongst many others!

(Don't say rice. I will smack you)

Look for cooking classes at www.OnlineCollegeClasses.org and you'll see that there is so much more to the cuisine than simply rice!

I daresay this was one of the best dinners I've ever had

We had so much delicious, freshly caught seafood on our table!

Teluk Kumbar Seafood is the name.

And that's where you're gonna having your sunset seafood dinner when in Penang

Here are only 5 outta 8 dishes we ordered.

Where else did we go for our Chinese New Year reunion dinner?

To Kok Thai Chinese Restaurant for an 8-course Chinese Banquet dinner! 🙂

This photo doesn't do the food justice at all!

3 generations at a round table for dinner

The boyfie stood out tonight; being the only white in an Asian restaurant on Chinese New Year

And that's not all..

In my family, food comes in abundance as the cooking never stops! 🙂

Delicous home-made reunion dinner meals & yee sang throughout the 1st week of Chinese New Year

Spent time with my maid who, if you didn't already know,

was my nanny & helped to look after me when I was a 3 year old toddler – till now!

Spent time with some friends over Barbeque Steamboat at

Town Steamboat along Macalister Road in the city

I was so full & didn't feel like talking. So I got bored.

At Healy Mac's Irish Bar & Restaurant along Straits Quay!

Don't remember what I ordered, most likely along the lines of Kahlua, Baileys,

Wild Turkey or some other form of coffe-cream liqueurs.

As always.

What's next?

It was Australia Day!

Fancy some shisha and a bit of Down Under spirit mate?

Went to the famous Kek Lok Si Temple.

Translated from Penang Hokkien as 'Temple of Supreme Bliss'

Welcome to the largest Buddhist temple in South East Asia!

Just for the record, I'm not Buddhist.

So… why exactly did we pay a visit to Kek Lok Si temple this Chinese New Year again?

To watch other people pray

For pretty lights!

The elaborate decorations during the festive season were gorgeous!

To take photos with Buddha…

And take photos with a bigger Buddha…

and take photos with Buddha again…..

… not just ONE Buddha, but many many Buddhas all lined up in a row…

We also wanted to climb up and take photos with the massive Guan Yin (Goddess of Mercy) statue, but alas we were too late.

We had to go as soon as the gates began to shut.

Good lord, I felt as though I've just warped back from China for a second! :D

And last but not least….. gambling session with the buddies!

Listen up, lucky cat! Bring mommy some good luck aight? 😀 😀

Just so you know, he most certainly kicked some ass 🙂

Good job, son!  Black cats aren't harbingers of bad luck after all, in your case, BabyChivas!

We caused the banker to be bankrupt and yes, I won double the capital I put in!

Hope you had a smashing Chinese New Year celebration of the Black Water Dragon just like I did :D

A late post is better than none! There you go, my Chinese New Year this year!

Congratulations to my gurlie Pamela Ooi on your graduation! Masters in Science: Environmental Monitoring and Management

February 20, 2012 by thejessicat

So one sunny (and by sunny, I mean excruciatingly hot) sweltering afternoon, I found myself away from the hustle and bustle of the busy city – on the countryside grounds of Nottingham University campus in Semenyih.

What have ye travelled so far for?

The photo speaks for itself 🙂

No, it's not my graduation ceremony… YET.

It's someone else's moment; my buddy Pam's!

I certainly would not miss her graduation for the world.:D

So upon request, I was more than willing to shoot her post-ceremony photographs of this memorable day.

You're looking at the graduate in Masters in Science : Environmental Monitoring and Management!

Yes, very long title. I think so too.

I've often contemplated the thoughts of taking my tertiary education a notch higher with a Masters!

These days, Bachelor's Degree holders aren't a rare sight to see at all.

This is especially now true that many schools have programs that allow students to earn a Bachelor Degree online. Yep, it's really that easy.

Practically every well-educated person has pursued an undergraduate course.

Which is why it's a smart idea to set yourself a qualification apart from the pool of undergrads.

With the graduates, Iguniwari (Pam's classmate) and Pamela

Here I am holding the scroll for fun – and prolly because it's red! 😛

And another one with fellow housie Edwin!

I was wearing a blazer initially but was roasting inside due to the weather 🙁

Many a time I've watched her sit for hours on end at the computer tabulating her data and doing whatever mumbo-jumbo required to complete her thesis paper of 'Perceptions of Human-Tiger Conflict in Peninsular Malaysia'

She even made a trip to the remote areas of Terengganu in the eastern countryside to conduct her research among the villagers living in the jungle and effects of tigers.

Also get bitten to near-death by mosquitoes LOL

Mission accomplished – finally!

My turn next, methinks? Masters of Journalism, Masters of Communications & Media Studies?

That's all just a thought for now BUT

Not sure if I want to endure months and months of research and thesis writing

I wish you all the best in your future undertakings and may you enter the voracious dog-eat-dog world of the corporate ladder with full gusto!

You can dooooooooo it!

Heartiest congratulations again, gurlie

This is for you

At the stroke of midnight : our random breakdance + housie photoshoot atop Genting Highlands!

February 8, 2012 by thejessicat

Sometimes we only reminisce what we do best during our younger days.

But some of us try to relive it.

When I was a teenager madly immersed in hip hop and street culture – like many others at the time, I used to dabble in some breakdancing routines with fellow teens and high school kids.

That was circa 2003-2005, mind you!

But one fine day, housie Edwin and I decided to give le old bones some good crackin'

Looks like we've still got it kickin', even after 10 years!

I can clearly remember my fave moves were the helicopter, windmill, turtle, 6-step, seven, scorpion and various air-freezes.

Unfortunately, I sucked at them; wasn't exactly the best B-Girl on the block.

But I sure harboured lots of passion for it, regardless.

Breaking into a side-freeze in Genting Indoor Themepark at midnight!

Futile attempts at the air-flare

It was indeed a random night out. ;)

It all happened 'cos we didn't feel like sleeping after continuous unfruitful rounds at Casino de Genting

Pretty indoor view at Genting

I was up in Genting Highlands to attend FREEZE and was glad le housies tagged along to have fun

We sure do get up to a lot of hilarious fun!!

Just being silly in my Deluxe Twin Room in First World Hotel, Genting

On the same night as the breakdance photoshoot, we also got up to taking artsy profile shots and group shots of us housies.

Let the randomity begin!

Posing and shizz

Beware of the Yakuza on the loose!

Take one!

Fashion spread cover photo much?

Think we can pull it off? 😛

I miss Genting Highlands already!

But the next time we get up there…

UNCLE LIM… WE DEMAND

YOU GIVE US OUR MONEY BACK!!

 $$$$$$$$$$ KA-CHING!

Girl, you got Skrillex hair! I know. NEW HAIRDO : The side-shaven buzzcut!

January 31, 2012 by thejessicat

As many of you would know, I am generally known as that red-head blogger girl.

I wouldn't expect anything else, considering the fact that I have donned red hair since 2006.

Including having a blog category of 'Hair Escapades' which documents bits & pieces of all things hair-related.
Anyway….new year, new look!

Imma be sporting a side-shaven buzzcut now!

Byebye to an entire chunk of long red hair

Still debating whether or not I should do it at that time

But hey, why not take the plunge? ;)

Apart from that, I'm still that same ol' redhead that you know me as.

How can I not be? Not gonna change my signature look/colour for the world! 😀

To be honest, I have yet to get used to this hipster hairstyle. 🙁

Prior to this, I would always just smile & love the camera at any angle thrown at me.

But after having this hairdo, I couldn't help but to fidget irritably at the way it swept sometimes wrongly to the side, or ruffled in an awkward position.

Hence I wouldn't stop taking test-photos to determine which angle suits this hairdo best

Even my mom and the boyfie noticed. They asked me why I seem to be camwhoring so much more now.

Truth is, I wasn't exactly camwhoring for fun; more of trying miserably to identify what works with the new cut.

Sigh. Just Paranoid Parrot getting the better of me ;(

Less buzzcut showing

More buzzcut showing

These photos today are some of the angles or expressions that *actually* work.

I realized that other angles really made me look like a boy or a dyke 🙁 🙁

So I guess it's this angle for now until my undercut grows back

To my surprise, when I tweeted and Facebook-ed the photo of my new hairstyle, so many people commented how awesome it looks, how it really suits me and my character as well as my having this hairdo was "just so very you Jess!".

Wow, I'm so relieved 🙂 Thanks so much everyone!!

It really made me feel better. Perhaps I'm just not used to actually walking around with it for the 1st time

Diagonal side view

Candid bottom view

Oh and speaking of which, the other half had an undercut done too 🙂

Here's a real close-up and side view of how it really looks like

Who's this new Skrillette in the block?

If you're wondering who inspired my hairstyle, it's none other than Dubstep artiste SKRILLEX!

Skrillex aka Sonny Moore

After having my Skrillex-haircut, I googled up to see which other celebrity has had the same do done.

I found heaps!

British singer Cher Lloyd

Progressive House & Trance vocalist Emma Hewitt

Even pop singer Ke$ha has it

Gradually, taking heaps of photos and eventually finding my best angle that complements my new haircut made me fall in love with my new side-shaven undercut buzz even more and more.

Also, throughout the past few days when I was back in Penang for Chinese New Year, I was somewhat pleased to have random people stopping me in the mall or in the streets telling me things along the lines of :

To which I replied…

I know, right? 😀

… and loving it by the day!
