When I was doing my usual shopping just now in Gurney Plaza after lunch with sis Rachel, I caught sight of a something so horrendously wrong.
Well, look at this. A mother and her little daughter.
Nothing wrong, yes?
BUT LOOK FROM ANOTHER ANGLE
-face censored due to privacy-
WHATTHEFLIP???
NO WAY!
I don’t know if it’s just me, or is this really an abomination??
P.S : Mom, I know you read my blog so… please don’t leash me like that if I get another speeding summon? Pretty please? =P =P
I JUST DON’T GET IT!
IS IT RIGHT TO DO THIS??
OR EVEN SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE?
edit :Maybe it happens overseas? As said by some of my readers.
But certainly NOT by Asian culture!
The leash was tied to her wrist!
The poor kid was seen staring into a blank space the whole time while being ‘leashed and walked’ by her ‘mother’.
Well I assume, she obviously ain’t her biological mother as the kid is most probably from African-American parentage and the lady is a Chinese.
As they walked away, sister Rachel and I were still in shock and disgust over what we saw. And the rest of the public turned and stared at the same scenario too.
ANYWAY
Below are a few excerpts of articles I found worth a read when I researched more on this matter :
“I’ll never forget the day I was walking with my mom and siblings in Serramonte Mall and watched in horror as a little boy ran forward and was practically snapped backwards by a leash that was tethered to his wrist”
[extracted from : The Poop, the chronical baby blog]
“Even though child restraints, harnesses and leashes have been used for many years, a stigma is often attached to their use. Mothers who have their child’s well being in mind will often be berated for “treating their poor child as a dog.” Dirty looks, finger pointing and lectures on the supposed trauma being inflicted on the child are common.”
[extracted from : eSSortment, info you want to know]
There were however, other people having a neutral stand on this issue :
“I do not like the idea of using a harness on a child, but I don’t condemn other parents’ decision to use one. Before I became a parent, I thought it was just awful to see a child on a leash or in a harness. I am still not entirely fond of leashes now that I am a parent, but I have bought and used one in the past.“
[extracted from : familycorner.com]
However, child leashes can also be an advantage. A parent voices out on leashing her child, pictures included.
Take a look

So YOU tell me now, is a child supposed to be walked by a leash?
WOULD YOU DO THAT??
Or.. should it just stick to the dogs?
It is after all, as subjective as it looks
^_^
That’s horrible… Really bad.
OMFG!!! WTF WEI… THE PM KID IS NOT A DOG LAR!!!
did you consider that the lady may have done that for a reason? after all, everyone there only saw the aftereffect, which is the child being binded. but what was the reason for binding? if the reason was like “she’ll run away/doesnt listen/etc” then yes it’s inhumane.
hmz.. though it might seem cruel.. we dont really know what’s happening to them..
who knows the kid is the type that’s hyper active and the kid cant think things rite?
perhaps, there’s big reason behind this whole scene that we don’t know..
but to me.. yes.. it may seem cruel.. aiya.. need to tie also use a better rope or watever it is la..
perhaps.. use something like a more fashionable rope?!
hmz.. well.. like i said.. no idea what’s wrong with them.. we donno what’s happening between them..
i wouldnt want to leash my child as if he/she’s a dog. even if they are really active, i would just keep my eyes on them all the time. btw, 1st time here. =)
well..i’ve seen that in KL too..but i must say that it’s a pre-caution taken to prevent the kid from getting separated from the parents or such..
oh well..that’s all i wanna say =)
i have the same feeling with yatz.. though not the shouting and disgracing of the poor kid
this is someone speaking from personal experience
I would understand what your shock and everything
I couldn’t really see the ‘rope’ the mom was using cos the pics were abit blur..
but this is from personal experience
My mom did that to me when i was very young, probabaly when i was 5.
when we were in Perth for our holiday, she used this harness rope thing from mother care and tied me too, and she held it from her wrist
bcos apparently i ran around alot without her knowing.
I guess I was cheeky when I was a kid.
but well, it wasn’t a big deal to me growing up remembering it.
i guess my mom did it for safety 🙂
well littlecicak and josh, i feel the same way too.. thats why i was shocked. =)
hmm yiling u have a point. but then.. yeah the after-effect shown in public looks very horrid lor.but ur right abt wot certain reasons the public might not know
parry yup, agreed with u. btw HAAAAHHAAHAH ABOUT THE FASHIONABLE ROPE! =P =P so funny lar u =P can become ‘rope fashion designer’ alrdy =P
calvin yep, neither will i. I’d rather hold my son or daughter’s hand
well yeah yatz and cincau true to that. safety measures n all, but then if it was really darn unsafe to take her out, then I wouldnt, mebbe unless she grows up abit more. other than that, i’d just be extra careful, hold her had and watch over her =)
wow kell there is a harness rope thing for mothercare too? hmm.. now thats a point to ponder, maybe it really is normal to do that overseas and its counterparts?
thanks for sharing kel! =)
what the fuck???
got such thing in penang??
so teruk lai
#_#
actually over here in australia, it’s a norm. most parents put leash on their kids. some kids are really naughty. like how my bro used to be. you leave him for a second he’ll be on the other side of the shop ruining people’s display window. so you can’t blame that parent
yep jerine, i heard so too. they sed it’s normal in australia. well, i had no idea =)
but i’ve never ever seen it b4 in malaysia b4, thats why i was pretty shocked. hehe
yesyes mike, there was indeed. i saw it with my very own eyes. hehe. i guess it’s a practice in other countries, but mebbe not in msia =)
walao. damn low life people’s deed.
Shame not on the girl but mom ! stupiakkk betul nye.
maybe the kid loves to wander around a lot without telling the adult. That is way more dangerous…
hmm.. agree that its very bad to use a leash. but if the child is very rebellious, or will anyhow run around then i guess its reasonable, though not very nice.
ESPECIALLY in ASIA la. waahh.. if in america or something where OTHER kids are leashed then not so bad ba..
the above situation is like she’s the only child leashed in the mall. then so embarassing for thhe child eh.. poor kid..
Hmm…it looks really bad in the photos, but then again there’s always a story behind everything. Wondering what the child’s story is.
However, perception being reality and all that it looks bad for the mom.
A great number of Singapore parents treat their offspring that way too. No, not with physical leash, but with unbelievable parental control well above their (the kids) age. It’s stunting the kid’s growth of street smart learning. Fcking serious.
Cheers,
Jordan

I’ve seen worst than this. It’s treating kids like dogs. And if anyone says that this is the way not to lost their child while shopping, screw them.
i can understand why some parents do it, especially when some kids can be very difficult, but it makes me think that parents are too lazy to discipline or run after their kids.
this is actually very common in kl. some kids are just acting like devils in the malls. haha. cant blame the parents but then again, if my kid is acting like a devil i wont do that to them. that’s shameful!
That girl is relatively old, maybe 7-8 years? Seems too old for a harness to me, which I can understand with a toddler.
Also, having it on the wrist may injure someone…
Seems to me that the mother/parents need to find a better way to teach the child to behave – unless the child has some learning disability or something…
GOSHH !!!
my mom ever threathened tu do de same thing when i was kid cuz i was very hyper but she never did it..
crazyyy la dat woman..
it looks cruel & embarassing..
poor child~
oh my… this is not way to go shopping.. it’s embarrasment! it’s mental torture!
but on the flipside, i think this lil child is notoriously famous for being the kid from hell.
i think there’s nothing bad about it. think positively, we wouldn’t want anymore Nurin or Sharlinie cases around, right?
The world is a dangerous place. 🙁
wtf…the ‘mother’ is a beast wei!
i’ll leash her the next time i see dat woman…pity that lil’ girl..
Well..i got a feeling that the mother is also quite abusive…who knows rite …
LOL ahmike somehow, i feel the same way!!!
well anonymous u have a point there too =) maybe thats why the mom leashed her. Safety measures
jenneth wot u sed is true too. it really looks horrid AND embarrassing.. especially here in penang where nobody does it
huaibin thats the thing. mebbe there’s a story, mebbe the kid has some hyperactivity thingy, i wudnt know. but frm a 3rd party point of view, nuh-uh =)
hehe jordan well, it’s a good thing that its done not using the physical leash =)
yes tag4sale i agree. if they really don’t wanna lose their kid, then hold their hand tightly or watch over them
lol emz they just take the easy way out i guess. the leash. =/
true lor vvens. srsly if my kid was like a nitemare i dun think i’ll tie her on a leash liddat. so embarrassing, especially in penang. no one does it
julian well said. she seems to me, relatively old enough to comprehend simple instructions. ohwell, lets just hope not all parents resort to this in the near future =)it’s quite unsightly
lol joy i had the exact same reaction when i first saw them in the mall @_@ well btw, i was locked outta d hse b4 when i was a kid. prolly too notti. haha
haha vince mental torture. =P pity the poor kid la, ppl looking at her. so did me n rachel, lol
well teefernee yup. on a positive side, it probably does help in curbing those child abduction cases.
lol cindy i cant imagine u taking that mother on a leash and walking her out! ROFL. XD
well…probably its the other way round..aha!!
