Malaysian International Gourmet Festival : A Hong Kong Encounter @ Tai Zi Heen, Prince Hotel

Friday, October 16th, 2009

The Malaysian International Gourmet Festival 2009 (MIGF 09) will be here throughout the month of October! Courtesy of Prince Hotel & Residencies, I received an exclusive media invitation for their Fashion, Food & Wine Review in Tai Zi Heen along with the rest of my fave foodies.

oriental

Prior to the event, we were privileged to have a short tour around Carven Ong’s boutique. He’s one of Malaysia’s best fashion designers – specializing in evening wear and wedding gowns.

emerald

I was enticed by the plethora of bright colours upon walking into his flagship outlet!
Yellow, green, orange, pink were seen abundantly in his color coordinated dresses.

hues

I wasted no time in browsing through the ballgowns, while visualizing which one I’d look good or princess-ey in. Hmm… lemme see..

dress2
Reminds me of a fairytale wedding of Cinderella!

But one that suits me the most, considering the fact that reddish hues was my most preferred colors. But unfortunately, I was too shy to come outta the dressing room. Ohmy! I wouldn’t wanna come out and parade in it when I was actually just trying it on!

But Carven & his team were very friendly and accomodating. It’s always best to know that you’re around warm company for more proffesional advice whenever you’re choosing the right attire for your wedding/ball.

carven
After all, he is THE wedding specialist!

There were also 2 chinese leggy models present for this event. They were strutting about in tight fitting cheongsams which complemented their svelte figure extremely well.

double
Double trouble!
Carven Ong specially designed those ‘Oriental Flower’ couture series for this event and it was portrayed beautifully by 2 chinese models.

intricate
Very intricately done outfits
if I have to say so myself

Speaking of outfits, check out the newly designed uniform of the hotel staff! Pleasant indeed. I like how Prince Hotel made the effort to befit their theme for the evening.

pristine

Oh here’s a really random photo. I don’t know why I look so stern and formal in the picture below but anyway, nice brown dress in my background ey? The cheong sam elements remained along with a burst of modernism.

Moving on to our other part of the Fashion, Food & Wine event for the evening was of course, where your tastebuds will take you.

Are your tummies ready to rumble?

For those not in the know, Tai Zi Heen is an award winning Chinese restaurant in Prince Hotel, and will once again, be part of the MIGF 09.

Tai Zi Heen will be presenting ‘A Hong Kong Encounter’ featuring Ricky Thein, their Chinese master chef ‘s signature Cantonese cuisine delicacies.

Ricky did the peace sign during our camwhore!

With Andrew, the F&B manager
and Donald Pezar, the head chef!

Imma share my very own Hong Kong encounter with yall right now. Let’s begin with the quadruple dished appetizers

quad

Clockwise from top :
Foie Gras Yam Puff

Shredded Beef with Dried Tangerine Peel
Wok-fried prawn with Asian Tomato and black sesame dressing
Steamed cod dumpling with crab meat glaze

My fave was the Foie Gras Yam Puff! Imagine, something so westernized met with the oriental Hong Kong style of yam combinations.

A duo of duckling and organic yin choy broths with sun-dried seafood, prawn and hairy gourd was next. The gourds was imported from Hong Kong itself! (Hairy too haha)

yinchoy

Anything with fish will definitely stir me up! Honey and soya baked salmon with fragrant crab roe, soya beans, broad beans, honshimeji mushrooms and wolf berry sauce came in next.

soyahoney

This was a real winner!

Impressive presentation, no? This dish was named the Citrus Marinated Lamb Rack Roasted With White Sesame Seeds, Wok-fried Baby Cabbage, Fresh Lily Bulbs and a Spicy Minted Plum Sauce

The next dish was Dan Mee With Soy-Braised Beef, Carrots, radish and leek topped with splash of red wine. I took d spoon and dunked all the wine into the noodles!

The desserts were a great fusion of Hong Kong cuisine as well. Fancy some Chocolate Whiskey Siew Mai, Vanilla Ice Cream With Fresh Mango Puree, Sago and Pomelo? Yum.

sweet
The chocolate whiskey!
Gosh.. a real craving

A wholesome dinner would not be complete without a glass of premium wine, yes? Like I previously mentioned, I fancy my meals topped of with a dash of wine.

To further enhance this Hong Kong Encounter, Pernod Ricard Malaysia introduced their fine selections of wine – Jacob’s Creek Reserve Shiraz to complement Chef’ Ricky’s exquisite, festive menu.

exquisite

For those who appreciate the finer things in life, this wine is for you! Tastes really good to the tastebuds. I bet all of us loved it to bits! From one to a group of more than ten, this fiesta really rocked out evening.

drink
Wine isn’t meant to be drank alone!

gshot
With 2 of my fave foodies, Sid & Tocky

group
The motley crew!

All in all, with much gratitude to Prince Hotel, I can definitely say that their Fashion, Food & Wine event was a success. All the best to Chinese Chef Ricky! We enjoyed every morsel of your gastronomic escapade to Hong Kong.

WHAT is in a marriage?

Friday, June 19th, 2009

What’s in a wedding? Do you really feel that it’s a mere exchange of marital vows or simply just a way of securing your ‘i-love-you’s for sanctity in the eyes of the law?

They say every lady is already harbouring thoughts of their dream wedding, so I’ve heard. Interesting. Yours truly on the other hand, has only forsaw her walk down the aisle (half-seriously of course) to be set in a unconventional locality with a black wedding theme.

Zombie bridezillas, anyone?

Okay, I shall stop here before the boyfie dies of cardiac arrest after reading this.

You know I’m kidding, luv

I deem weddings are equivalent to culture. I practically grew up with Red Chinese weddings in restaurants & hotels, tea ceremonies, loud toasts of YUMMMM SENNNGGGG and the never-ending traditions set in oriental legacy.

Not too long ago, mom took me to a Malay Wedding on an early Saturday morning. I dreaded having to go, lest I nodded off in public… from partyin’ out late the night before. But I went though, for reasons I totally do not recall.

They gave us an adorable door gift each – which wasn’t bunga telur. Hmm.. am I missing out that much on Malay weddings? I’ve always thought bunga telur was the in-thing.

Here’s my dearest kakak helping herself rather conveniently, to some Malay food. I loved the beef rendang curry they served the most, and their nasi minyak (waxed/oil rice)

A piccie of myself with Mr. Father of the Bride. He’s Chinese though. You can’t tell, right? He’s now a Muslim and converted to Islam when he married a Malay lady many years ago.

Mom and I waiting for the main event to begin

Oh lookie, how adorable these lil bridesmaids were.

Such innocence in children!

There was a lil display of martial arts by a young gentleman.
Silat, as it is aptly called in Malay.

When it began, an elderly Malay folk did his thang for 20 seconds with the sword and the group-walk down the aisle ensued.

I reckon the whole kampung went up the stage.

That’s Mom and Kakak. She’s been with us for almost 20 years now. Been so attached to her over the years – love her to bits. Hope you’re having a good time in Indonesia now!

Dad and I.
Don’t worry poppps, I’m doing well here in KL!

Now that you’ve shared my recent experience with Malay weddings, what about Indian Weddings?
Again, I tagged along with mom and her colleagues.

We waited in the car for eons omfg.

Anyway, we got there eventually.

Similar to the aforementioned Malay wedding, there was a lil display of performances before the bride and groom headed towards the front. Hmmm.. how come we don’t practise that in Christian weddings?

Mom and I camwhoring again.
The need of visual repetition is a remedy to cure that void.

Anyway, see some bright lights and interesting rituals in the background above?

Aunt Chan and her adorable daughter.

Anas the shyguy and I

The statue of the elephant-headed deity, Lord Ganesh.

Another tiny Lord Ganesh!

We finally managed to get to the stage where the bride and groom sat. I watched as a female elder sprinkled water over them, of which I presume as holy-water.

Many guests came forward to extend their love and congratulatory well-wishes.

We followed suit.

Before we adjourned, I took a quickie of another one of Lord Ganesha’s statue with the traditional floor-drawings, the Kolam. Amazing how this form of art is drawn based on dots in specific grid and geometrical patterns

Do you really have the incessant desire to get yourselves married and
settled down early? What say you?

Anyway, now that my taste of Chinese, Malay, Indian and multi-racial weddings are over, imma sit quietly in one corner to brainstorm my zombie wedding. Who wants to be my gremlin-of-honour?

You DID NOT just hear that.

p.s : Someone please take me to an Egyptian wedding!

Conquering the cinema

He’s Just Not Into You

Believe me, that movie made me laugh & cry & laugh & cry
The crying part however, did not ONLY come from the movie. You shall see why soon.

The moment I arrived, Joshua told me,

“Hi Jess, meet Jess!”

David, why do you have such an astonished look on your face? :P

It wasn’t surprising to meet another Jess;
but it was,
to meet another Jess of my height. ROFL

36 peeps altogether then marched towards the theaters on the highest floor and continued more mingling. Among the highlight of the day was when Jess mentioned to Aaron :

“Hey Aaron, you actually look very nice today!”

I couldn’t stifle my laughter the moment I heard that. Hmm.. should he take that as a compliment, or a sub-conscious insult? But awww c’mon, we all know Jess meant it as a compliment :)

Are you ready peeps?

The movie was fab! I’d give it a 5/5 rating. It really gave me a lot of hindsight of the way two very different yet similar beings called the male and the female, work psychologically. Uh-huh. Being gurls can be quite complicated, but being guys well, can be even more complex! No worries, we gurls understand. J

At the part where the male star gave a surprise proposal to Jennifer Aniston,

(sorry, I’m tragic at screen names)

Pam said to me “How come guys don’t do these things in real life?”
And I went “Haha. Maybe they prefer to skip the drama?”

AND SUDDENLY
The screen warped to photos of an unfamiliar couple. I was puzzled, how come I didn’t notice these two people throughout the movie? It turned out, that Mr.Romeo wanted to give his lady a surprise proposal too. A live band played in front of all of us and the lucky gurl was surprised, I could tell. Mr.Romeo then gave his speech and asked for her hand in marriage.

BEFORE HE EVEN FINISHED HIS SPEECH, TEARS STREAMED DOWN A FEW OF OUR FACES – INCLUDING ME! Like, wtf? I’m not even the one he’s proposing to, why the eff was it touching enough for me and the rest to cry?

Pam & I went “AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW”
So dramas do happen in real-life after all.

I guess all the gurls will already be expecting more from their to-be fiances’? Sorry men, Mr.Romeo here has just spoiled the market for yall!

The after-movie picture.

We then chilled by Laundry Bar for some drinks and NIGEL’S SEAFOOD PLATTER. Hahaha! Kidding, pal. Some drinks and random chit-chats more of. I was sitting at the far (read : very very far) end around Nigel, Kel, David and Jen. Wanna see how far away we are?

Kel & I look like black dots splattered on the world map
While Yat & Tallen gets all the glory!
:P

That being said, Imma give Nigel, Kel, Jen and myself more glory. ROFL. Take that!

A nice montage by Nigel :

Spot me? Since there’s two Jess’

Aightey, tick-tock goes the clock. Yat was nice enough to take me back home, as I didn’t have any transport back! Thanks, pal.

To the buddies, I had a blast with you guys!
And to the new peeps I’ve met too, nice meeting yall for the 1st time!

Wedding bells!!

I miss weddings! =D It’s been a few months since I’ve last been to one. After watching 27 Dresses with my sweetheart, I seem to be more fond of weddings.

Coincidentally with all this wedding euphoria, it was of no surprise that I got married last week.

No, silly. I did not.

*

It was my bestie Rachel’s uncle’s wedding! =D

My sweetheart and I, together with Vincent, Penny & Rachel herself attended her uncle’s wedding. One which I enjoyed, simply because of the great company and the ridiculous & humongously large cross-dressing entertainer.

Ahh.. doesn’t he she it just turn you on?

What about now? Sexxxayy titties yo

Here are some of the other pictures of the evening:

Eyes off my man.

Amongst food and fun, surprisingly enough, a star emerged from the dishes on that very night.

IDOL VINCENT TAN

I snapped lots & lots of piccies as usual And we.. HEY YOU!

That’s MY job! Back off! XD

Anyways,

Things went drunk-a-doink and emo bit Penny somehow for some reason. But, we managed to cheer her up with our silly stunts

and made bestie Rachel the joke of the day by transforming her into a plant

The peeps that made the table merry, emo and ludicrously fun!

Thanks fo the invite Rachel dear!

and to end the night with tradition……

YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMMMMMMMMMMMMM
YAM
YAM
YAMMMMMMMMM

(OH ENOUGH ALREADY)

SENG.
