A month after Chinese New Year.. better late than never – GONG XI FA CAI!

Friday, February 24th, 2012

So after exactly a month, I've finally got round to finishing the batch editing of all the photos from my 2012 Chinese New Year!

Don't know why I didn't exactly take as much "proper photos" this CNY - all of the photos you are about to see today are all shot with sub-par phone/tablet camera quality.

If I could sum up Chinese New Year for me every year (in no particular order), it  would be :

1. Family

2. Food

3. Hometown

4. Angpows! $$$

5. Red

So here's what I was up to this Chinese New Year – in photos!

So here we go… FAMILY!

Yup, that's my immediate family. Small, but complete nonetheless :D

At 5'7", I believe I inherited my height from my dad.  Don't know if that's supposed to be a good thing, since I'm always b!tching about my height on Twitter. Heh.

Anyway, roadtrip up North to Penang with my fellow Penangites! :D

Penang Bridge during sunset!

The moment I crossed the bridge, I felt a tinge of nostalgia sweeping up to me like a morning breeze.

Good ol' Penang; encompassing so much memories of growing up, life, love, friendships and more

KOMTAR: Penang's tallest landmark heritage

Brought the boyfie home for CNY.

Hahahaahah  what does High Expectations Asian Father have to say?

lololol just kidding! They got along pretty damn well

Seafood dinner by the seaside with the parents & him for our early CNY reunion dinner. Being islanders, seafood is one of our staples amongst many others!

(Don't say rice. I will smack you)

Look for cooking classes at www.OnlineCollegeClasses.org and you'll see that there is so much more to the cuisine than simply rice!

I daresay this was one of the best dinners I've ever had

We had so much delicious, freshly caught seafood on our table!

Teluk Kumbar Seafood is the name.

And that's where you're gonna having your sunset seafood dinner when in Penang

Here are only 5 outta 8 dishes we ordered.

Where else did we go for our Chinese New Year reunion dinner?

To Kok Thai Chinese Restaurant for an 8-course Chinese Banquet dinner! :)

This photo doesn't do the food justice at all!

3 generations at a round table for dinner

The boyfie stood out tonight; being the only white in an Asian restaurant on Chinese New Year

And that's not all..

In my family, food comes in abundance as the cooking never stops! :)

Delicous home-made reunion dinner meals & yee sang throughout the 1st week of Chinese New Year

Spent time with my maid who, if you didn't already know,

was my nanny & helped to look after me when I was a 3 year old toddler – till now!

Spent time with some friends over Barbeque Steamboat at

Town Steamboat along Macalister Road in the city

I was so full & didn't feel like talking. So I got bored.

At Healy Mac's Irish Bar & Restaurant along Straits Quay!

Don't remember what I ordered, most likely along the lines of Kahlua, Baileys,

Wild Turkey or some other form of coffe-cream liqueurs.

As always.

What's next?

It was Australia Day!

Fancy some shisha and a bit of Down Under spirit mate?

Went to the famous Kek Lok Si Temple.

Translated from Penang Hokkien as 'Temple of Supreme Bliss'

Welcome to the largest Buddhist temple in South East Asia!

Just for the record, I'm not Buddhist.

So… why exactly did we pay a visit to Kek Lok Si temple this Chinese New Year again?

To watch other people pray

For pretty lights!

The elaborate decorations during the festive season were gorgeous!

To take photos with Buddha…

And take photos with a bigger Buddha…

and take photos with Buddha again…..

… not just ONE Buddha, but many many Buddhas all lined up in a row…

We also wanted to climb up and take photos with the massive Guan Yin (Goddess of Mercy) statue, but alas we were too late.

We had to go as soon as the gates began to shut.

Good lord, I felt as though I've just warped back from China for a second! :D

And last but not least….. gambling session with the buddies!

Listen up, lucky cat! Bring mommy some good luck aight? :D :D

Just so you know, he most certainly kicked some ass :)

Good job, son!  Black cats aren't harbingers of bad luck after all, in your case, BabyChivas!

We caused the banker to be bankrupt and yes, I won double the capital I put in!

Hope you had a smashing Chinese New Year celebration of the Black Water Dragon just like I did :D

A late post is better than none! There you go, my Chinese New Year this year!

Congratulations to my gurlie Pamela Ooi on your graduation! Masters in Science: Environmental Monitoring and Management

Monday, February 20th, 2012

So one sunny (and by sunny, I mean excruciatingly hot) sweltering afternoon, I found myself away from the hustle and bustle of the busy city – on the countryside grounds of Nottingham University campus in Semenyih.

What have ye travelled so far for?

The photo speaks for itself :)

No, it's not my graduation ceremony… YET.

It's someone else's moment; my buddy Pam's!

I certainly would not miss her graduation for the world.:D

So upon request, I was more than willing to shoot her post-ceremony photographs of this memorable day.

You're looking at the graduate in Masters in Science : Environmental Monitoring and Management!

Yes, very long title. I think so too.

I've often contemplated the thoughts of taking my tertiary education a notch higher with a Masters!

These days, Bachelor's Degree holders aren't a rare sight to see at all.

This is especially now true that many schools have programs that allow students to earn a Bachelor Degree online. Yep, it's really that easy.

Practically every well-educated person has pursued an undergraduate course.

Which is why it's a smart idea to set yourself a qualification apart from the pool of undergrads.

With the graduates, Iguniwari (Pam's classmate) and Pamela

Here I am holding the scroll for fun – and prolly because it's red! :P

And another one with fellow housie Edwin!

I was wearing a blazer initially but was roasting inside due to the weather :(

Many a time I've watched her sit for hours on end at the computer tabulating her data and doing whatever mumbo-jumbo required to complete her thesis paper of 'Perceptions of Human-Tiger Conflict in Peninsular Malaysia'

She even made a trip to the remote areas of Terengganu in the eastern countryside to conduct her research among the villagers living in the jungle and effects of tigers

Also get bitten to near-death by mosquitoes LOL

Mission accomplished – finally!

My turn next, methinks? Masters of Journalism, Masters of Communications & Media Studies?

That's all just a thought for now BUT

Not sure if I want to endure months and months of research and thesis writing

I wish you all the best in your future undertakings and may you enter the voracious dog-eat-dog world of the corporate ladder with full gusto!

You can dooooooooo it!

Heartiest congratulations again, gurlie

This is for you

Simple Plan LIVE in Malaysia! Get Your Heart On tour @ KL Live, Kuala Lumpur

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

I was that kid who grew up with Simple Plan's music in high school.

Yup. one of those millions of kids all over world.

And now, a decade later…..

They land in Malaysia; performing in front of our very own eyes!

It was not only surreal; it was a dream come true

And I know I speak for many youths and even adults out there!

At 9pm sharp, Simple Plan came out with gusto and a grand entrance!

They introduced themselves, greeted their fans and burst into their first song of the night, 'Shut Up'.

Simple Plan – Shut Up

Next up was their favorite song from their latest album, 'Can't Keep My Hands of You' and 'Jump'

Wiggle wiggle wiggle!

Loved the way they performed those two ;twas cheeky and cute! ;)

Hundreds of screaming fans at the Kuala Lumpur stop of Simple Plan's Get Your Heart On tour

What came as a surprise was when Simple Plan sang a cover of Black Eyed Peas 'Goodnight'.

Pretty damn good a rendition, if I do say so myself!

'When I'm Gone' came up next. Lead singer Pierre Bouvier extended his hand to shake hands with his zealous fans at the mosh pit!

Watch the footage for yourself! :)

Simple Plan - When I'm Gone

The next song that they performed rocked the socks right outta me.

I was yelling/singing along to one of my favorites from Simple Plan, 'Addicted' with many other fellow fans!

Simple Plan – Addicted

All the members of Simple Plan began to interact and engage with their fans, holding a friendly "competition" to see whose side of the stage sang/cheered louder than the other.

They cued the crowd to sing along with them.. or rather, SCREAM ALONG!

'My Alien' came up next, followed by 'You Suck at Love'.

What I found really ingenious was when Simple Plan sang their next song 'Thank You', they sang a local version of it!

Yup, you read right.

They sang the song in Bahasa Malaysia; replacing the lyrics of the chorus with TERIMA KASIH instead of the English THANK YOU

TERIMA KASIH! TERIMA KASIH! TERIMA KASIH!

After they performed 'Your Love is Just a Lie', the stage lighting faded into darkness.

Simple Plan gave a cue for the audience to hold up their phones and wave them in the air with their screen backlight turned on and they began to perform 'Astronaut'.

So clever! Sending SOS from this tiny box indeed – using our cellphones!

The band proceeded to sing 'Summer Paradise' before belting out more cover songs

This time, it was a cover of Cee-Lo's 'F*ck You', Taio Cruz' 'Dynamite' and Pink's 'Raise Your Glass'.

Simple Plan – cover of Pink's 'Raise Your Glass'

It was stellar! Two thumbs up!

Like many others, theboyfie and I enjoyed their spontaneous rendition of those songs.

A dramatic build-up in the midst of their performing 'Jetlagged' and the backdrop changed – unveiling a new one altogether.

Simple Plan – Jetlagged

They continued spreading their contagious energy drive and continued their 2-hour set with 'This Song Saved My Life''Welcome to My Life''I'd Do Anything'.

Simple Plan – Welcome to My Life

When they left the stage and the entire concert venue was shrouded in darkness, the fans were certainly not ready to go home yet.

Chantings of ENCORE were heard bellowing from all sides of the crowd and after a few minutes….

The band came back on stage with 'Loser of the Year'! :D :D

Emotions and nostalgia came rushing back to me when they began to sing my favorite Simple Plan song of all time.

Their very FIRST single that they released back in 2002 from their first album 'No Pads, No Helmets… Just Balls'.

Please take a moment of silence and watch the footage below with smiles (and occasional headbangs)

No wait, scratch that.. JUST SING A LONG with them just like I did!!!!  :D :D

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gX7m066TfnE

Simple Plan – I'm Just a Kid

LOL you can actually hear me scream-singing.

They wrapped up their gig with a beautiful song, 'Perfect'.

Many people were seen joining hands and singing along to the said melancholic and meaningful choon with the band and everyone else.

It was a wonderful gig, I can totally vouch for that!

All the top favorite songs from all their albums were performed with so much enthusiasm and the energy-driven concert was just unbelievable! So much joy, nostalgia and headbanging resonated from wall to wall!

Thank TuneTalk for bringing Simple Plan down to Malaysia for their series of 'No Big Deal Lah' concerts!

If it weren't for TuneTalk, we wouldn't be able to have the amazing pop-punk-rock band performing right in our city

For that, THANK YOU VERY MUCH TUNE TALK! The first of many more concerts to come!

Credits also go to both my awesome assistants for the day, Pamela for helping me out in the afternoon at Simple Plan 'Get Your Heart On' tour Press Conference and Kon for shooting the footages of this concert night.

Theboyfie also got me the Simple Plan band T-Shirt as a memorabilia for tonight's amazing event!

Loving them for more than a decade, clearly there will always be a part of me that belongs to Simple Plan
