Strange lessons from a night in the Pasar Malam + why I love my kick-ass Grannypooo

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

As you would probably know, here I am back in the hometown with ze focker family :)

Spending quality time with the folks, either shopping, having meals, watching TV or catching up over a game of poker is indeed therapeutic.. especially during a stress-free long weekend!

And then of course, there is the Pasar Malam after some grocery shopping.

Pasar Malam is a Night Market, in the Malay Language. There are many reasons why I like to frequent Pasar Malams, I'm no cheapskate LOL but because there's just so much to see (and shop) there! Multitudes from different cultures all come together in this melting pot of stalls

After coming home from last night's Pasar Malam voyage, my observations taught me something I never really noticed about Pasar Malams initially. So here's a wee bit of what Iearnt

1. "Burgers" come in all shapes, sizes… and cultures. Yes, cultures.

Last night, I discovered that "authentic China hamburgers" exist. And the odd part? The vendors weren't any bit of Chinese.

But they sure taste good! It's just lil ham slices, sausages and chicken floss wrapped in egg with some batter

2. Vendors selling boring pets like goldfishes use adorable fluffy poodles to attract easily fascinated customers (like me)

Needless to say, lotsa gurls flocked the fish store. And because of the pool of squealing girls there, it domino effected the boys to crowd around too. So there ya have it, a huge crowd of people at the fish store looking at a dog. The Gods of Irony would be so proud!

3. Smelly tofu honestly, isn't smelly after all.

It actually tastes yummy. I guess theboyfriendJosh was right after all.

Fermented tofu might be so unappealing and stink badly, but it's friendly to the tastebuds

4. Pasar Malam vendors segregate themselves naturally the moment they arrive.

1 Malaysia, much?

In one corner there are the Chinese, selling all sorts of weird things you can possibly imagine… from armpit tweezers to pirated DVDs and rattan whips, from cactus to bras and cooking pots

In another corner there are the Malays, selling a myriad of fruits… prolly from their own dusun, kebabs and enormous rolls of fabric and woven mats

And another corner would be the Indians, selling sugar laden coconut cakes, deep fried potato crackers and dangling blingbling accessories

5. Free entertainment from the handicapped

Okay, not entirely free – donate according to goodwill and the kindness of your heart!

There would be limbless people sitting in the middle of the Pasar Malam singing songs for us all. And most of the time, the songs are pretty good! Think popular hits from the 70s. Okay, here's some change for you, mate! :D

Apart from those stuff that were on sale there, I managed to haggle out some goodies which caught my eye. Little by little, I think the bill never came up to a 100 bucks! Oh, and I had fruit juices too. A vile medley of celery, pineapple, beetroot and cucumbers. Icky. But healthy -__-"

It was only after I got home, I realized that I wasn't part of the Moulin Rouge cabaret

*hopes & prays these lovelies appropriates the next theme party I attend*

Apart from being your wannabe Ella Fitzgerald and La Toya Jackson, my fancies took a trip into the time machine and went back to the era of the retro and the old skool phase. Check out my new shades :D

No, not the lower pair of miniature granny glasses

I scare myself sometimes, reminding me of my father and his huge-ass housefly spectacles

When I got home, I caught Godmom and Popoh playiing with my camera. Apparently, they were learning to camwhore :D No prizes on where they picked that up from! :P But apart from managing 5% of their faces in the frame and 95% of the picture of the empty wall and ceiling, they did pretty alright for a start :P :P :P

Tried on the retro polka dotted bow fro the fun of it!

Bought this raggedy torn-ish black top from the Pasar Malam too

It's really sheer, but I pumped up the contrast :P

Oh and allow me to share why I love my Popoh so very much.

Apart from being that perfect granny figure of spoiling her grandkid and showering me with tender loving care, this granny can kick ass!

She's tattooed.. and so am I!

She gave me a lighter for being a good girl. Yes, not a light nor a lightsaber, a lighter

She drinks like a fish :D *highfive popoh

but most importantly….

SHE CAMWHORES LIKE A PRO WHEN I LEAST EXPECT IT

Now why do you think I cancelled all my weekend plans to be with the fockers?

:D :D :D because they are awesome like that

Encore! Partying at Horeca, Eurobeats @ Twenty One Table + Terrace bar BSC

Friday, May 28th, 2010

Wheeeeeee!!

It's that time of some happy party pics before the much dreaded exams swamp my study table :D

So I was at the Eurobeats party along with some of ma party peeps, just the other day. It's also one of the parties under the Horeca series of events! Here's the Wonderland party held at 7atenine last week which I've blogged about too.

We managed to get the bar table all to ourselves

Jason, MeiYing, Esther, myself and Shannon were there throughout the night :D

And so the menu was once again a fabulous blend of cocktails! In addition to the menu they had last week, this week features 4 new cocktails too. I don't exactly remember all 4 names but methinks there was one called 'Slippery Pool' or something along those lines.

I recognized both the bartenders from the previous Horeca party! :D

They made me a cocktail called the 'Pink Lover'. Strange but way too coincidental, I was decked in pink that night. So it's one 'Pink Lover' for the pink missus ey? FYI I'm not always dressed in pink, more to a red & black person.

It was Baskin Robbin's Pink Wednesday too, hence the pinky-pinkness you see.

Takin' a swig off' my Pink Lover!

Soon, I noticed something flashy in the distance. Something moving… something electrifiying!

Something brightly lit, possibly a human lightning rod?

ohh nope it wasn't any of the above

Whoa! It was a team of futuristic electric LED girls dancing on the podiums and bar-tops!

Pretty cool, if I do say so myself

So while the lads were busy feasting their eyes on these electricfiying dancers, we gurls, particularly Esther and I were busy foolin' around with our cameras!

and nibbled on some kiwi

(which was supposed to be part of the drinks but since the bartenders left it out so openly… *whistles*)

Just a lil, wouldn't hurt right? :D :D

There were many to go around anyways! :P

Not up for hard liquor today, for a change! The free flow of cocktails just wouldn't stop! Heck, I'm not complaining :P :P Just sad that I was my own chauffeur today, so kinda worried about being stopped by the cops again for 'drunk driving'.. bah!

Though I'm never in support of reckless drunk driving, you should know what DRUNK DRIVING means by ludicrous Malaysian standards – even just 2 regular pints of beer is enough to have you fail the breathalizer test. Imagine that! Yes, it is sad. Don't remind us.

So.. I guess it's a no-go for today!

More party piccies before we all ended the night hehe

xoxo :D

ZOMG this mentalist David Lai can bend a coin in half!

I SAW IT WITH MY VERY OWN EYES

and no, I'm not delusional. He can even bend forks in omni-directions

Blur & failed picha with #nikifail :P :P

So the long weekend for us all has begun! As we speak, I'm back home with the family for a well-deserved break :)

Happy Wesak Day for those who are celebrating and to those who are traveling back to their hometowns, have a safe drive yeah? :D :D *cough*

Don't indulge in "drunk driving" ahhaahhahha.

Speak soon!

I saw the real trophy! FIFA World Cup trophy tour at its Malaysian stop, watch all 64 football matches live in HD on Astro Byond

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Oooooookayy!

This post is gonna be about footie! :D

I know most lads are excited for this, heck, some of my guy friends are even hurling their arses overseas just to watch it with their very own eyes! :D :D It's 2010's FIFA World Cup of course, the massive football fever that happens every 4 years!  (and when wives/girlfriends have to put up with their husband/boyfriend glued to the telly every night for a month)

Back this year, the FIFA World Cup will be held in South Africa! :D

Here I am with a true blue South African bro from the hood

Last week, Astro threw its doors open to a grand launch! Now, loads of footie fans can watch all 64 FIFA matches live in High Definition (HD) :D Can you believe it? We can enjoy the FIFA euphoria on 12 channels altogether too!

This will be very first HD Broadcast on FIFA World Cup on Astro Byond!

Kicking off the mark of a complete viewing experience! :D

Plus, interactive features such as news updates, results, statistics, player's profile, live chats and football online games

Best part is, for those of you who don't know English, you can watch selected live matches on Astro Arena (for BM) and Astro Wah Lah Toi (for Chinese). In support of localization yo!

Oh and for those of you who don't watch telly, you can still catch the live video streaming of FIFA World Cup

on www.astro.com.my/stadiumastro

Courtesy of Astrolife, we had the chance to catch the real FIFA World Cup trophy in its round-the-world trophy tour! One of its stops was our city, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia! It was held in Mid Valley Megamall. Hen duo ren ah!!

The insides were packed with footie fans!

Buddy Bart was such a good company and we had lotsa fun roaming about the whole FIFA footie fiesta and nomnoms too :D I think it was a coincidence that we were wearing red! And no, I'm not supporting Spain :P Don't know if he is!

Wow looks like everything around us is red too haahha :D

Let's go exploring!

Cannot believe it! I'm moments away from having the real trophy within a whisker of me. And no, the huge-ass poster does not count :P

TIme to go in!

When we entered the arena, there were lotsa people all dressed up in the spirit of FIFA. Football jersy, check! Painted face, check! Crazy wigs, check! They were running around greeting everyone who entered :D Such a pleasant surprise!

As those were in support of South Africa, here's one that's rooting for Switzerland!

Check out the flag on his cheek :D

But what turned out a more pleasant surprise was this!

Awwwwwwwww isn't he adorable?

Meet our mascot this year! :D

We were in awe the moment we walked further in. Live football games everywhere, world flags, mascots and so many people were engrossed in the football themed activities they had for us! Can't wait to play

Game on!

In the background, Bart getting all sweaty playing a football game. It's this motion censor-like screen with footballs flying everywhere, and the player has to juggle and kick all the balls upwards so that it doesn't touch the ground.

Much like balancing the ball up and passing it to another player with your head… the way the football players do!

While he's busy playing, I was busy by standing and blowing my honky tonk

yeah, everyone get's one as their door gift! It honks really REALLY loud

As coca-cola was one of the sponsors, they had their giant sized coke bottle on display almost everywhere! It's bouncy and real huge! Lotsa people were leaning on it and it still stood strong in all its glory :D Yours truly included.

Some virtual football passing game too. You really have to use your own body and strength to do it :D

So everyone was all hyped up playing, camwhoring, blowing their honky tonks and cheering including us! It was deafening in every sense of the word. Bart wanted a jumpshot on this mini field so I followed suit.

#fail :(

I was just preparing to jump!

Yayyyy!! Gogogo Germany! :D

There were lots to see too. Merchandises, showcases, action figurines and more. Don't know if they were up for sale or not, but they sure were cute! Miniature too :) :) Collector's item yo

There was even an African man playing the rural percussions and sharing with us a wee bit on South African culture

Lotsa books and mags too for reference

We finally had enough of the whole heeby-jibby, which took us so many hours. How can a World Cup fever subside so fast while its in the middle of the heat? :D Finally, it was time we decided to lay our eyes on the gambit of the afternoon – the FIFA trophy!

But before that, we had to watch the 3D FIFA commercial in the darkroom :D

If you ask me, it was very well done. Touching & melancholic too!

After the commercial, we took off our 3D glasses and proceeded to where the trophy was. Woots!

And there it is! :D The real thang passed down for decades and decades!

Each of us had a framed polaroid photograph of it, in close proximity! :) :) :) I touched the golden wonder, albeit the barrier of the glass box. But STILL :P Happy maximus! It's on blu-taped to my wardrobe now. Would like to scan it here but devoid of one. Bah! :( Till next time fellas! :D

In the meantime, we're planning a World Cup Tweet-Up, to watch the live matches together! More of that soon

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

Ya know how Google always changes their logo on their Google.com homepage?
Well, in conjunction with Pacman's 30th anniversary, Google Doodle was supportive (and fun!) enough to make their logo into a very interactive game of Pacman!

So log on to Google.com now to play before it goes away!

Hopefully it'll stay for the entire weekend

And if you feel bored playing alone, go abduct your neighbour or wake granny up to play with you! :P :P

Japanese nomnoms at Sakura Buffet

Okay now they're full again! :D

Corona + Killkenny

The moment we got home, it was straight for Pacman!

Look how it got us all intrigued by what we saw!

By the time we were busy playing this old skool fave game, I got to know that lotsa other people were already preoccupied with it as well woo hoo! Didja play it yet? :D

So if ya didn't know about this yet, quickly head on there to join the fun too! :D
